Eating out with kids – Giggling Squid Restaurant Review: Those that know me well know that my favourite food is Thai. Yet Monkey has a sesame allergy so we have stayed away from it for that reason. Not wanting to risk an allergic reaction. Yet he loves food and often asks about different types and what our favourites are etc. He was always a little sad when we said we couldn’t try out mummy’s favourite. When we were contacted to see if we would like to try out the new Little Tapas for Little People Menu at out local Giggling Squid Restaurant. I was sad that we would have to decline. However with a bit of exploration I found that they had an allergy menu. This was revolutionary as I could see at a glance what dishes contained sesame. I was pleased to see the wide of variety available to him. On the little tapas menu there were two dishes that included sesame but he could have everything else.
We opted to visit early evening on a Friday. The restaurant was quite busy with the after work rush but we were seated quickly, with a very clean high chair and offered drinks promptly. Monkey was pretty excited about his menu, which had great little pictures on it to help children understand the options. On the other side there is a colouring page. There wasn’t really room for the buggy at the table so we left it near the door. Although when it cleared out a little and Kipper got sleepy we did manage to put it next to our table for him to fall asleep.
We ordered some prawn crackers for the table as we made our menu choices. You can add these to the children’s tapas menu for £2. However you get such a large bowl we didn’t bother. Plus they can be pretty spicy so I wasn’t sure if the boys would like them. To my surprise even Kipper couldn’t get enough of them.
I was intrigued to see if we would be able to feed a twelve month old along side a five yearly on the tapas menu. Theres lots of choice with all dishes being smaller versions of those on the man menu. Which I really like as I try and avoid restaurants that offer the standard fish fingers and chips for kids! Monkey was on a bit of a meat feast opting for tender strips of grilled sirloin steak and grilled pork on skewers with dipping sauce. For Kipper I ordered chicken satay and chicken fired rice. The rice dish was huge and fed both of the easily. Its possible to mix and match the eight dishes available on the tapas menu, choosing two for £5.95. You can also get free plain or sticky rice.
Their main course came out with our starters, which also scores well. As there is nothing worse than waiting for their food, while you have yours. Monkey made quick work of tucking into his meat options! Especially enjoying the chicken satay (Kippers!) and steak.
I need not have worried about Kipper who also loved the chicken satay eating a whole one to himself. Along with a considerable amount of rice. Of course being Thai we also had to join in! I really like the wide variety of dishes available, some of them a little unusual. One of the tables near us ordered a fish dish which looked amazing. I didn’t quite have the guts to ask him to let me photograph it. I opted for Thai fishcakes to start and Ginger & Soy Scallops for main. Hubby had Pork Dumplings followed by Grilled Sirloin Steak. We also had my favourite dish of chicken Pad Thai to share.
I loved the presentation of all the food, and the scallops were probably both our favourite part of the meal. They were so tender, I would without doubt order them again. On the Little Tapas for Little People menu you can add a dessert for an extra £2. Monkey had chocolate ice cream which went down extremely well.
Things we loved:
- Despite it being busy the staff are super friendly and nothing is too much
- There was plenty of room for the super clean high chair. We didn’t try out the baby change unfortunately so I can not pass comment
- Great selection of food for the little people and adults alike. There are also some more unusual dishes which really caught my eye. The fact that there are a lot of options around seafood is great for me.
- The children’s menu is extremely well priced when you think a standard basket meal can cost the same. I am happy that I can now stat to introduce Monkey to different tastes and textures. Not only that but even a twelve month old can eat off of the menu.
- The fact they have an allergy menu will mean that we without doubt visit again
Overall we really enjoyed the eating out experience and will definitely return. Monkey would like to try out some of the other options and has already started asking about when we are going back so it gets a big tick from him! Thank you Giggling Squid for a great meal out.
