Create & Grow Squires Summer Fun

It’s the Summer holidays so we are all on the look out for activities which will keep the kids amused for a sensible price. Being a fan of anything crafty I was very interested in the Create & Grow activities being run by our local Squires Garden Centre in Washington.

Last Wednesday Monkey and his little friend were invited to try out one of the activities – decorate a pair of bug sun catcher wind chimes. There are different activities running throughout the Summer period on Mondays and Wednesdays. You don’t need to book you can just turn up which is great if the good old British weather is living up to its unpredictability. So how did we get on?

The area for the activities has moved into a wooden cabin next to the aquatic area towards the back of the garden centre. Meaning that there is plenty of room for the kids to get stuck in as well as room for buggies. At the moment the cabin is going through a bit of refurbishment but it is much better there is now a specific area for the activities, plus it means they will also be running adult classes going forward. Because its inside it means the rain won’t affect your plans. They also have a little gazebo set up with tables and chairs, so if the weather is behaving the kids can sit outside. There are plenty of tables and chairs so theres no need to worry about having to wait. The activities run 10am to 4pm.

Monkey chose to make a ladybird and bee wind chime and got to colouring them in straight away. The materials were good quality and there was a lovely lady on hand to help if needed. It was an ideal craft for a four year old and in total took about 20 minutes. Both of them were really proud of their little creations and had a great time. Monkey has already asked to go back again to try something else.

The other activities that are running over the next few weeks are:

1st & 3rd August  – Plant and decorate a strawberry pot (£5.75)
Grow your own delicious, succulent strawberries in your own personalised glittery terracotta pot. All you need is a splash of creativity, water, sunlight and a little love.

8th & 10th August – Paint a pair of pebble animals (£3)
What adorable creepy crawlies do I see lurking in the garden? There could be a gentle ladybird or a buzzing bumblebee. Anything is possible at the tip of your paintbrush!

15th & 17th August – Plant a butterfly friendly hedgehog basket (£5.75)
Get your hands dirty and plant a hedgehog basket filled with colourful plants and moss that will attract beautiful butterflies into your garden.

22nd & 24th August – Paint a wooden insect house (£5)
Paint a wooden insect house and create a home for the creepy crawlies in your garden.

29th & 31st August – Paint and decorate a wooden bird feeder (£5)
Paint and decorate a wooden bird feeder with foam shapes to place in your garden and watch the birds enjoy it.

We visited Squires at Washington, they also have a cafe on-site with baby changing facilities and a small soft play area. Meaning its an ideal half day activity if you also stop for lunch. You can find out more on the Washington page of the Squire’s website here. The activities are also running at the other Squires centres across the UK, although please check the website first as selected stores will only have the activities available on a Monday

…Oh and how can I forget the giant deck-chair which also proved a source of amusement!

What have you got planned over the Summer Holiday? I would love to know about any other local activities which you are getting up to in the comments below.

Squires invited us to try out the sun catcher activity in return for this review, all opinions are my own.

What a lovely local activity. I love finding things like these within spitting distance of home. It’s great that they’ve also planned for every eventually by having things like the gazebo set up. Thanks for sharing.

Ooohhh that looks like loads of fun. I will look out for these activities, I hadn’t realised they were running anything. We love sun catchers as they are so quick to make. Love THAT chair! I am sure that would take up our entire garden. #bloggerclubuk xx

Hee Hee I know I would love to sit in it of an evening with my favourite wine in one hand and a book in the other (who am i kidding it would be the phone catching up on social media!) Thank you for stopping by xx

  3. Alana - Burnished Chaos

Great sun catchers, and good that the activities only took around 20 minutes. My kids tend to get a bit bored when things take too long, this seems perfect.

  4. Kaye

That looks great, fab activities for the kid. Looking forward to stuff like this as my two get a little older. Right now, I think Archie would just paint his whole body haha. Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays. Kaye xo
