AD Gifted – We were sent The Angry Birds Island Challenge Slot Car Set for the purpose of review. All words and opinions are my own.
Review The Angry Birds Island Challenge Slot Car Set: I remember Angry Birds from my early twenties but as far as Monkey is concerned its a brilliant new phenomena. So when we were asked to review The Angry Birds Island Challenge Slot Car Set from Maisto I knew it would be a big hit. Launched to coincide with the release of the Angry Birds film the racing set is based on the popular Angry Birds game. Which Monkey really enjoys playing. So how did we get on?
In the box you get two cars, one with an Angry Bird driver and the other with King Mudbeard Leonard as a driver. There are also two variable hand controllers a battery pack, twelve pieces of track. Plus supports to create height and some barriers to stop the cars flying off the track. There is also a full set of instructions to show you how to put the track together. Which thankfully are easy to follow. I was also pleased to see that there was a spare set of guide keels included, so that you can change the old ones when they get worn. I also noticed on the box that there is a backdrop which you can cut out.
The track itself clips together. Monkey did have a go at putting it together himself but struggled to get it to connect properly. I do think it needs adult help as it is a little stiff. Although he found this frustrating it does at least mean the track holds together well, which is crucial to play. In order to make the hand controllers work you need to add in batteries to the power pack. I am use to these sorts of toys having mains electricity so I was shocked to find that we needed eight AA batteries.
Next we added in the track supports to make a bridge for the figure of eight track. The supports themselves screw together which means you can vary the height if you wanted to try them in different places. We needed them on the maximum height for where we placed ours. They are easy to assemble and Monkey did this bit all on his own. We then added the barriers at the corners to try and help keep the cars on the track. They are only strips of coated ribbon so to be honest I am not sure how much help they were.
Once that is done you are ready to play. The hand controllers will determine the speed of the car. If you press the controller hard then the car will speed up. Initially we did struggle a bit as they are very sensitive and keeping the car on the track was a challenge. A lot of perseverance is needed to get the right speed and it is a challenge that I was pleased to see Monkey managed eventually. It will take practice as even the adults in the house struggled at first.
The Angry Birds Island Challenge Slot Car Set is aimed at children aged six and above. I think this is a fair because of the sensitivity of the hand controllers although even the adults in the family struggled to keep the cars on the track. At three Kipper was too young and gave up straight away. It retails for around £34.99 and is available at all high street toys shops and online
Things I like about The Angry Birds Island Challenge Slot Car Set
- Its compact and can be put back into the box for storage which is key in our house
- The plastics are bright and colourful and it feels good quality which means it should stand up to the normal wear and tear that toys get.
- I like that they include spare guide keels to extend the life of the set
- The instructions are clear and easy to follow both for setting up the track but also for changing the guide keels.
There is only one thing I am less keen on and thats the number of batteries the set requires. I would like to be able to see he option to convert to mains power. But this doesn’t affect the enjoyment Monkey has had from the set. If you would like to try it out for yourself then I have another set to giveaway.
