8 Ideas to Give Yourself a Mum Upgrade and Feel Your Best

This is a collaborative post

Being a mum can mean spending so much time looking after everyone else that your own needs end up somewhere near the very bottom of the list. A mum upgrade isn’t about completely changing who you are or overhauling your entire lifestyle. Sometimes, a few small changes for busy mums can help you feel more like yourself again. Whether you’re refreshing your car, finding clothes you genuinely love, or making space for something that is just for you, here are eight ideas to help you feel your best as a mum.

Jazz Up Your Car

Your car plays a surprisingly big role in your family life. It is where you do the school runs, grocery trips, activities, errands, and the occasional drive-thru coffee when you are dying for that hit of caffeine. One simple and cool idea is to look at cheap private plates, particularly if you want something personal without spending a fortune. It can make you feel better and prouder of your vehicle overall too. Add a great smelling air freshener, clear out the accumulated wrappers, or treat yourself to a proper valet too. It may sound minor, but getting into a car that feels fresh and personal can lift you up!

Give Your Wardrobe a Refresh

You don’t need to replace your entire wardrobe to feel more put together. Start by removing anything that you never wear, no longer fits you properly, or simply doesn’t make you feel good. Then identify a handful of outfits that work for your actual life. A comfortable pair of jeans, a flattering sweater, an easy dress, and shoes you can actually walk in can go a long way. You might also choose one item that feels a little more special than your usual daily “mum” uniform. The goal isn’t to dress for someone else, but to look at yourself in the mirror and love what you see.

Make Your Mornings Easier

If your mornings regularly start with missing shoes, cold coffee, forgotten school books, and someone announcing they can’t find their favourite t-shirt, a little bit of preparation can help a lot. Try doing a few things the night before, such as setting out clothes, packing bags, or preparing breakfast ingredients. Even ten minutes of preparation can remove some unnecessary rushing from the start of your day. Most importantly, save a tiny part of your morning for yourself. Drink your coffee whilst it is hot, put on music you love, or spend five minutes getting ready without simultaneously searching for someone else’s socks!

Find a Beauty Routine You Will Actually Use

Your beauty routine can become complicated very quickly, especially when you’re already juggling a very busy schedule. Instead, try to choose a few simple products that make you feel fresh and polished. If you have been putting off a haircut, manicure, facial, or other appointment, booking one can be a nice reminder that you deserve to be taken care of too. It doesn’t have to be expensive either; just choosing something that makes you feel good will help you in so many ways.

Reclaim a Hobby

When was the last time you did something just because you enjoyed it? Motherhood can make hobbies feel optional, but having an interest that belongs to you can be surprisingly refreshing. You could pick up a book, try painting, start baking, join a class, learn a language, take photographs, or finally watch the TV show everyone has been recommending. You may discover that the hobby itself matters much more to you than you realise.

Upgrade Your Everyday Essentials

Some of the things you use every day are worth upgrading simply because you use them every day. Think about your handbag, water bottle, pyjamas, bedding, headphones, coffee mug, or work bag. If something is worn out, replacing it can make your ordinary routine seem much nicer. There is something so satisfying about opening a bag you love, slipping into comfortable pyjamas, or drinking your morning coffee from a mug that makes you smile.

Put Something Fun on the Calendar

Family calendars can become packed with appointments, school events, birthdays, sports, and activities, leaving very little that you are personally excited about. Change that by putting something fun on the calendar for yourself. It could be lunch with a friend, a concert, a weekend away, a shopping trip, a spa appointment, or simply an afternoon where nobody needs anything from you at all. Having something to look forward to can make a busy month feel much more enjoyable. You could even make it a regular date with yourself or a friend, so it becomes part of your life rather than something you only arrange when everything else is done.

Make Your Home Feel More Like You

When it comes to creating a cosy home there is so much you can do to make it feel more like you. Even though it might be full of toys, laundry, school artwork, sports equipment, and all the other evidence of family life. That is completely normal, but it doesn’t mean every room has to be designed for the children. Pick one small area and make it yours. Add a candle, fresh flowers, a framed photograph, a cosy chair, or a piece of artwork that you love. You could refresh your bedroom with new bedding or create a little corner where you can read with a cup of tea. You aren’t trying to create a home that looks perfect like a magazine. You are simply making sure there are reminders of your personality amongst the practical needs of your family on a daily basis.

A mum upgrade is about giving yourself permission to regain some control over your life again. You don’t need to become a completely different person, spend a huge amount of money, or find several spare hours every week. Pick one or two ideas that genuinely appeal to you and start there. When you feel good about all the little details of your everyday life, those small changes can add up and give you a real boost in confidence. Most importantly, remember that looking after yourself isn’t selfish. You are totally allowed to invest in yourself and make your own life feel fully enjoyable in every way!
