Make your own cola bottle pinata. For me, a pinata always makes a party or celebration. Over the years it has become a family tradition to have a pinata when it is the boy’s birthdays. I cannot even talk about birthday planning without getting the pinata request! They always really enjoy them and it has become a fun childhood memory. Of course, pinatas are not just for birthdays. So when we were asked to get involved with the #MyStarmixFavourite campaign we knew exactly what we wanted to do. Create a pinata. Especially since our go-to filling are the Starmix mini bags.
HARIBO Starmix has been around for more than 25 years and it has just got better. As it is now made with fruit juice, each piece is even tastier and there are new flavour combinations to add even more excitement. The iconic pieces – Heart, Ring, Bottle, Egg and Bear stay the same, which is just as well since we all have our favourite. The boys are no different, when asked they didn’t even need to think about it. Both deciding on the Cola Bottle. So we have decided to make our pinata in the shape of a Cola Bottle!
Make your own cola bottle pinata
You will be pleased to know that it’s really easy to make your own pinata. This one takes about two hours to make from start to finish. Even with some little helpers and the good news is you are likely to have most of the things you need around the house.
Make your own cola bottle pinata – materials
- Cardboard box – we chose a white one we had but anyone will do and you can even make smaller versions out of cereal boxes
- Loo rolls to provide support between the pieces of cardboard
- Tape and gluestick
- Scissors, rubber and pencil
- Tissue paper for decoration
- String or ribbon for hanging
- HARIBO Starmix mini bags for the filling
Make your own cola bottle pinata – method
Step 1 – draw out the design of the cola bottle onto the card and cut it out. Once you have it you can use it as a template to cut out the back one. Remember to turn it over if your design is not symmetrical and if like us your box is only white on one side.
Step 2 – Secure some toilet rolls to one of the shapes. We used double-sided tape to do this. Measure the height of the toilet rolls and cut out a strip of card the same width to go around the outside of your shape. If you are using a cardboard box, I would roll up the strip first before trying to attach it. This will make it more flexible and so easier to manipulate around your shape. Secure with tape to the shape with the toilet roll attached. Before adding the other side on top and doing the same. Do not forget to leave a little space to allow you to fill up your pinata.
Step 3 – add a pencil-sized hole to the top of the shape to allow you to thread a cord or ribbon through to hang up your pinata. Before cutting strips of tissue paper to decorate. To attach them to the shape use a glue stick and put the glue on the cardboard rather than on the tissue paper. Tissue paper can rip easily and I found this the easiest way. You have to start at the bottom of the cola bottle and layer it upwards to get the overlap going the right way.
Step 4 – Once decorated fill your pinata with lots of lovely HARIBO treats and cover up the hole with some more tissue paper.
Step 5 – Once finished hang and bash! As you can see Charlie really got in to breaking the pinata and winning his prize!
Which Starmix is your favourite?
Although the boys favourite is the Cola Bottle. Mine is most definitely the Ring. I used to love putting one on every finger when I was a child. It is a memory that has stayed with me. I hope the boys will always remember the day we created our Cola Bottle pinata and the fun they had breaking it open.

Pinatas are great for children’s parties but we are not quite at that stage with the Covid precautions. You mention how long it took to make, but how long did it take for your boys to destroy it? The drawback with pinatas is that it can take houes to make one but microseconds to destroy your loving creation.
I honestly thought that was a shop bought pinata its brilliant – deffo going to have a go at making my own for the next birthday party we do.
My fave star mix is a bear but i think that might be a difficult to do lol
