Inside the smallest house in Great Britain.  Ever wondered what the smallest house in Great Britain looks like on the inside? While we were staying in North Wales we decided to visit as it is very close by to Conwy Castle. We had brought tickets to visit Conwy Castle as part of our plan to see the four Welsh UNESCO castles during our stay. However, realising that the smallest house in Great Britain was only a five-minute walk away we decided to head there first. Measuring just 122 inches tall and 72 inches wide with 1.5m square of useable floor space I was interested to see what the boys would make of it. 

How to find the smallest house in the United Kingdom

The smallest house in Great Britain is located on the quayside in Conwy. It is clearly signposted from the centre with brown tourist signs and since it is painted red it is hard to miss it. The quay is a nice place to walk. When we visited the tide was out so the boys enjoyed looking at the boats and also walking along the gangway to the edge of the water. It is a popular crabbing spot too as we saw many abandoned crabbing nets and lines in the mud. 

Where to park when visiting the smallest house in Great Britain

Although you can actually drive down to the quayside. If you are planning on exploring Conwy further than the smallest house in Great Britain. Then I would suggest parking in the large tourist carpark – Morfa Bach Car Park (Conwy LL32 8FZ). It is only four minutes from the castle and you can walk under the subway into the centre of the town. Which means it is also easy to access the quayside too.

How much does it cost to enter?

When we visited it cost £1.50 for an adult and £1 for a child. They accept both cash and card, which I was a bit surprised about due to the low transaction amount. Although it is not much to enter you will only be in there for. a matter of moments, after all, it is the smallest house you will have ever been in. There is also a small shop which is set up next to the house. So if you would like to get a photo of the house without this in it you will need to arrive before 10 am when the house opens.  It sells postcards, tea towels, magnets and similar.

Curious about the inside of the smallest house in Great Britain?  Well, unsurprisingly there is not much to it.  But seeing the boys faces as they realised the implications of living in such a small house was priceless. There is an audio guide that explains what you are looking at and a bit about the last tenant Robert Jones, a fisherman, who was an amazing 6ft 3 inches high. The house was actually condemned as inhabitable and stopped being lived in from May 1900. Luckily to save it from being demolished the Jone’s family brought it and is still owned by his descendants now. 

The downstairs has a storage bench, stove and fireplace with a small table. To reach the upstairs there is a ladder which you can climb. But it is not possible to actually stand on the first floor due to it not being deemed as structurally sound. There is a single bed, small bookcase, fireplace and vanity unit. 

Is Quay House worth visiting?

Yes. It is a fascinating piece of history and a great way of reminding the children just how lucky they (and we) are.  It is only a shortstop. By arriving as it opened  we were lucky to not have to queue. I can imagine it gets busy during peak times.  Also it is a great one to tick off the bucket list… the smallest house in Great Britain.
