ToggleWhere to get a Roast Dinner close to Paddington Train Station
I am a little bit in love with Paddington, it has become an area that is buzzing. Bright and colourful barges line the canal along with a string of bars and eateries. It is a fun vibrant area of the city which you can even explore by boat if you fancy it. When it comes to food you are spoilt for choice. However, if you want a Sunday roast close to Paddington Train Station then head to Smith’s Bar & Grill. Available on Sundays they also offer a good value set lunch menu and an a la carte option on the other days of the week. To find out more about these options head over to Me, You The Dog And A Baby to read Lyndsey’s review.
Review Smith’s Bar & Grill Paddington
Smith’s Bar & Grill is located almost right next door to the Paddington underground entrance. In Sheldon Square (W2 6EY). We walked from Hyde Park which took around twenty minutes. Although we returned via the tube, back to South Kensington where we were reviewing 100 Queens Gate Hotel. It took about ten minutes to walk through the station to pick up the District & Circle line.
As well as seating inside they have a number of tables that overlook the canal. During our visit, we sat outside and soaked up the atmosphere. Even though you are outside the tables are fully undercover thanks to several large umbrellas which are also equipped with heating lamps. Although I was disappointed to see after we had sat down that a couple of the tables were smoking. I am really not a fan of the smell especially when I am eating. Thankfully by the time, our food arrived the offending party had left the restaurant.
Sunday Roast Menu at Smith’s Bar & Grill Paddington
As mentioned previously the menu’s focus on Sunday’s are around roast dinners. With everything, you can think of meat wise. Including poussin, pork chops, beef (Picanha) and leg of lamb. They even have a 28 day matured grass-fed Chateaubriand and Mushroom Parcel as the vegetarian choice. Prices range from £15 for the pork through to £37 for the Chateaubriand. If you do not fancy a roast then there are also a selection of salads to choose from, various sides and a mouthwatering array of starters.
I was surprised to be told that they did not have a kids menu. This wasn’t a problem for Charlie. Who relishes the chance to choose off of the adult’s menu. However, for our beige food-loving five-year-old this was a little bit of a blow. Thankfully we located the bar snacks at the back of the drinks list and ordered him olives to start followed by chips and chicken bites. Our waiter did helpfully suggest some of the small plates as a child-friendly option. But with many of the starters having the more complex flavours of truffle, crab and a number of tartare dishes it would not have worked for Harry.
What was the food like at Smith’s Bar & Grill Paddington?
To start I ordered the scallops as did my husband. Charlie opted for the asparagus with truffles. The scallops came on a bed of pea puree with oyster mushrooms, slices of pink baby beetroot and pea stalks. They were delicious and by far my favourite dish. The asparagus was lovely and buttery with shavings of black truffle and a fried egg. Also dressed with pea shoots and came a very close second in the best dish stakes.
For main I opted for the leg of lamb and the boys went for Steak Picanha medium-rare. I was surprised by the hunk of lamb that was served with the usual roast potatoes, vegetables and a Yorkshire. It was well cooked and fell away from the bone easily. Gravy came in a little accompanying pot, which there could have been a bit more of. But for those that do not like gravy (like my mum), it is good to see it being served on the side as a matter of course.
Picanha is a cut that is similar to rump and located on the animal’s back at its rear. This meant that it has a line of gristle along one side of the meat. Which needed to be removed before eating. The deserts were off of their set menu, Charlie opted for Strawberry Cheese Cake, Harry Ice Cream and I the Tiramasu. The husband not a fan of sweet things had a double espresso. But the cheese board looked very good and I had a bit of cheese envy!
Review Smith’s Bar & Grill Paddington – The Service
We arrived at a similar time to a large group of people and I feel as though this did have an impact on the level of service we received. Waiting time between courses was well over twenty minutes. Which when you are dining with children is not ideal. We were in the restaurant for almost three hours, which is a long time to keep kids entertained.
When our main courses were served, Harry’s was not served at the same time. It took another ten minutes for him to get both his chicken bites and chips. They came out piping which lead us to believe his order had been forgotten about. Not serving a hungry five-year-old when serving the rest of his family unsurprisingly lead to tears. I had to chase twice for it which makes me wonder when it would have arrived if I had not done this.
Unfortunately, it was similar to when we were waiting for dessert. But then our waiter seemed to disappear so it could be that we got missed due to a change in service. When I questioned it, they came out straight away and half of Harry’s ice cream had started to melt. It is a shame that our experience was a little bit lacking on the service front.
Will we go back?
Despite the service, the food was very good and we would return again. I would like to try some of their other options although I would like to see a more formalised kids menu. Rather than trying to cobble something off of the bar snack menu.

Planning a visit to London hopefully before Xmas, thank you for the review.
Wow! The food in this place looks fantastic! In December we are planning a visit to London. I am saving this post for then. It would be awesome to visit it! Thanks for sharing!
Bad service is so disappointing and honestly so unnecessary but glad you still had a nice time.
That Yorkshire pudding is screaming my name. I love a good roast dinner with Yorkshire pudding and peas. Yum! All of this food makes my hungry for mums cooking.
The food looks amazing! But I think we would also have to visit without the kids if there’s no kids menu. My boys are all about the kids pizza and chicken strips.
Thank you fir this wonderful information. I found it very interesting and useful.
Smith’s Bar & Grill looks like a must-visit restaurant! The food looks delicious 😍 I will surely check out this place when I am in and around Paddington!
Everything sounds and looks good. I laughed at your description of beige loving food lovers. I have a TEEN who still is a beige food loving child.
Wow everything is plated so beautifully as well! This looks amazing.
We are thinking about visiting the area soon, need to add this to our stops, the food looks delicious
The food look immaculate! Loving the presentation
I hate it when we get poor service. Glad you had a nice time.
This looks like a great place x
Perfect presentation of the food and a gorgeous slice.
I’m a huge fan of roast dinners, it’s one of my favourite meals!
When i am travelling I tend to reach for the easy options and get in a fast food mess and feel sluggish and horrid so it’s nice to know there are places where I can get read food.
Fantastic review! I’ll defiantly look into here next time we are in Paddington but without the kids as mine are so fussy xx
