Nestled in the heart of Brittany, Josselin is a charming small town with a rich history and beautiful scenery. During the last week of the Summer holidays, we spent a week sailing in Brittany. Going along the River Vilaine and the Canal de Nantes a Brest. Leaving Messac and aiming for Josselin, I wondered if there would be enough time for our visit. I am so glad we made the effort it did not disappoint. And was probably the pinnacle of our trip. We arrived in the afternoon and left in the morning after visiting Josselin Chateau. You need to allow a full day to explore.
One of the key attractions is the impressive Josselin Castle, impossible to miss towering above the river. Constructed in the 11th century and owned by the Rohan family, one of the oldest noble families in Brittany. The castle’s grand towers are beautifully reflected in the Oust River. Besides the captivating history of the castle. Josselin also boasts an array of other attractions, from its picturesque canals and lush green parks to its fascinating museums and memorable boat tours.
How to get to Josselin in Brittany
There are several ways to get to Josselin, France. The town is located in the Morbihan department of Brittany, in northwestern France, and is well-connected to the local area.
- By car: If you are driving to Josselin, the town is easily accessible via the A11 motorway, which connects Paris to Nantes. From Paris, it takes approximately 4.5 hours to reach Josselin by car which is 430km away. The town is also well-connected to other major cities in the region. Such as Rennes which is an hour away (89km) and Nantes which is an hour and forty minutes (136km).
- By train: The nearest train station to Josselin is in the town of Ploërmel, which is approximately 15 kilometres away. From Ploërmel, you can take a taxi or a local bus to reach Josselin.
- By air: The nearest airport to Josselin is Rennes Airport. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a local bus to reach Josselin. The airport is well-connected to other major cities in France and Europe. With regular flights to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and other destinations.
- By boat: We arrived by boat the town has several places to moor and all the facilities you need including electricity and water. There is no harbour as such and we did not need to pay to moor, unlike other places we visited.
Once you are in Josselin the town is small enough to explore on foot.
Where to Park in Josselin
If you are planning on reaching the town by car you will be pleased to know that there are several options when it comes to parking. There are several free car parks in the town. Many of which are well-maintained and conveniently located near the main attractions.
One such free car park is on Rue du Canal, 56120 Josselin, and is located right next to the Chateau close to the Centre Historique de Josselin. It is a reasonably small car park although it was not full when we visited at the end of August. But it may be worth getting there early during peak season.
Another option for parking in Josselin is the free lot situated about ¼ mile away from the town centre – 7 Rue de la Carrière, 56120 Josselin. Although this parking facility may be a bit further from the main sights compared to other options, it is much bigger and so a good fallback option.
Top Tips for a visit to Josselin in Brittany
- Once we had moored up the first place we visited was the Tourist Information Centre. This is located in the centre of the town and a great place to pick up a map and also the heritage trail in English.
- If like us you are looking to stock up on food then there is a large Super U market located around 850m from the Chateau. We walked there first thing in the morning to stock up. This meant that we had a lot of the town to ourselves and gave us a great opportunity to take some photos before the other tourists arrived. The walk takes about twenty minutes and takes you through the historic centre.
- Like many places in France if you want to eat in a particular restaurant then it is worth booking in advance. Also, be mindful that many shut during the day and do not open until 7 pm which can be a bit tricky when travelling with kids. Also on certain days of the week, Monday and Tuesday they may be shut especially out of season.
10 Things to do in Josselin
The Historic Chateau
Of course, top of your list of things to do in Josselin is the stunning Château de Josselin in Brittany which boasts 1,000 years of rich French history. During our visit to Josselin, we visited the Chateau. As we wanted to get back on the water we showed ourselves around with the help of detailed guides in each room. Although it is possible to take one of their tours. The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who share intriguing facts about the chateau, its significance in Brittany’s history, and the many artefacts on display. Some are also available in English if you ask at the admission desk.
Either way, you can explore the beautifully maintained rooms, each offering a glimpse into the lives of the past occupants. The tapestries, paintings, and antique furniture make you feel as though you’ve stepped into a living museum. The charm of the sprawling estate extends far beyond the chateau walls, with lush gardens adorned with sculptures and trimmed hedges.
Medieval Half-Timbered Houses
Josselin in Brittany is a “Petite Cité de Caractère” which translates to “Small Town of Character” in English. It is a label given to small towns and villages in France that are recognized for their exceptional cultural and architectural heritage. They must meet strict criteria, including having a population of less than 20,000, having a significant cultural and architectural heritage, and being committed to preserving and promoting their heritage. There are 193 and counting.
As you walk through the town centre of Josselin, you cannot help but admire the beautiful half-timbered houses that are scattered throughout the area. I am always a sucker for half-timbered houses and these are particularly pretty painted in a myriad of different colours. Which are offset by blue and white bunting and lots of flowers, it is such a floral town.
Sainte-Croix District
Another must-visit location within the town centre is the historic Sainte-Croix District. It is one of the oldest and most picturesque neighbourhoods in Josselin. The district is located on the left bank of the Oust River, which flows through the heart of the town and is characterised by its narrow streets, old stone houses, and traditional architecture.
The Sainte-Croix district takes its name from the Sainte-Croix Chapel, which dates back to the 16th century and is a fine example of Gothic architecture, with its tall spire and intricate carvings. The chapel is still in use today and is a popular destination for tourists. There is also the Maison des Remparts, a 15th-century house that was once used as a guardhouse for the town’s fortifications. The house has been beautifully restored and now houses a museum dedicated to the history of Josselin and the surrounding area.
We spent most of our time in this area. As well as the historic attractions, the Sainte-Croix district is also home to several shops, cafes, and restaurants. The district is particularly lively during the summer months, when it hosts a range of festivals and events, including the town’s annual medieval festival.
Heritage Trail
This heritage trail allows you to discover the medieval town of Josselin through its narrow streets. Spread throughout the town, several panels reveal the secrets of the “Petite Cité de Caractère”. The signs are in French. But you can pick up an English version in a leaflet from the Tourist office. The leaflet “Balades à Josselin” has a circuit with the points of interest. There is also a treasure hunt trail for kids which you pick up and the kids can enjoy as you see the main attractions.
Basilique Notre Dame du Roncier & Miraculous Statue
The Basilique Notre Dame du Roncier dates back to the 12th century, although it has been extensively renovated and expanded over the years. The church is a perfect example of Gothic architecture, with its tall spires, intricate carvings, and beautiful stained-glass windows. Including the stunning rose window, which is located above the entrance to the church. The window is made up of a series of intricate geometric patterns and is a masterpiece of medieval stained-glass art.
There is also a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary that is housed within its walls. The statue is known as the “Notre-Dame du Roncier”. Is said to have miraculous powers and is venerated by many Catholics in the region. According to legend, the statue was discovered by a local farmer in the 14th century. Who found it hidden in a thicket of thorns, or “roncier” in French. The farmer brought the statue to the nearby chapel. Where it was installed and quickly became a focal point for local religious devotion. Over the years, the statue has been the subject of many miracles and has drawn pilgrims from all over the world.
Canal de Nantes a Brest & River Oust
We arrived by boat and so did not have any plans to hire one of the electric boats which you can do so on the river side. But even if you do not hire a boat. The reflection of the historic buildings on the water’s surface creates a picturesque scene that is perfect for photography enthusiasts. There is a nice walk along the river and lots of information about the town and its development on boards written in both French and English. There are also locks, the lock keeper’s house, the mill and the weir which we passed when we moored up.
Countryside Escape
The countryside around Josselin in Brittany offers a fantastic escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. With opportunities for various outdoor activities, like cycling, hiking, and boat tours on the waterways. There is also the Bois d’Amour, also known as Lover’s Wood, which is a stunning park where you can immerse yourself in nature, taking strolls or picnicking under the shade of the trees.
Local Art and Craft Shops
Wandering around the historic centre there are some lovely craft and art shops to explore. Many are run by local artists and range from ceramics and glassware to glass etchings. Along with painters, sculptors, and illustrators.
Market Day Josselin Brittany
Josselin market takes place every Saturday morning held in the town’s main square, Place de la Republique. The market offers a wide range of fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, and seafood. As well as a variety of artisanal products such as bread, pastries, and honey. There is also a range of handmade crafts and souvenirs, including pottery, jewellery, and textiles.
Josselin Festivals
In addition to their historic and cultural attractions. Many “Petite Cité de Caractère” towns and villages also offer a range of activities and events throughout the year. Including festivals, markets, and cultural exhibitions. Josselin is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, with several festivals and events held throughout the year.

- Josselin Medieval Festival – Held in July, this annual festival celebrates the town’s rich medieval history with a range of activities and events, including jousting tournaments, medieval markets, and live performances. Spread over several days with people dressing up in medieval costumes.
- Music Festival – Held in August, this annual music festival features a range of local and international musicians performing a variety of genres, from classical to rock and pop.
- Christmas Markets – Held in December. These markets offer visitors the chance to sample local food and drink. As well as handmade crafts and gifts, in a festive and atmospheric setting.
- Flower Festival – Held in May. This annual festival celebrates the arrival of spring with a range of floral displays, exhibitions, and workshops.
- Heritage Days – Held in September. This annual event offers visitors the chance to explore some of the town’s most historic buildings and landmarks. Many of which are not usually open to the public.
Museum of the Doll and Childhood
This museum is dedicated to the history of dolls and childhood toys. With a collection of over 1,000 items on display. The museum is located in a 16th-century building in the heart of Josselin. Open from April to October. If you visit the chateau then you will exit through the museum which has many toys I remembered from a child.
