Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest in Lifton Devon

After staying at Glynn Barton Cottages we decided to go Pumpkin Picking on the way home. We had been recommended Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest as the best pumpkin picking in Cornwall by our hosts. So since it was on the way home we stopped to try it out. Although Strawberry Fields Lifton Farm Shop is technically in Devon it is right on the border of the two counties and the perfect end to our Cornwall Halloween week. We had a really good visit picking out our own pumpkin.

Where is Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest

The pumpkin festival is part of Strawberry Fields Farm shop which is located in Lifton, a village in West Devon. The address of the farm shop is Strawberry Fields Farm Shop, Cookworthy Road, Lifton Devon, PL16 0JL. There is something going on all year round as well as offering homegrown pumpkins in the Autumn. They also have a sunflower patch where you can pick your own flowers from late May through the Summer months. A small lavender field and run an amazing-sounding Christmas experience. The Strawberry Fields Farm Shop also sells a whole range of delicious food and gifts.

Parking at Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest

When we arrived there were several people directing cars for parking. This is to ensure that everyone gets a space. The parking lot is really large and of hard standing. But this is a popular pumpkin picking spot in Devon attracting a lot of families. There is free entry to the car park although you do need to pay for tickets to the pumpkin festival and maize maze.

Food and Facilities at Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest

The fall festival is really well thought out and a great way to find your perfect pumpkin. However, there is so much more with lots of fun activities to keep the children entertained. All of these are included in the admissions areas so you can not reach them without having purchased an admission ticket for the pumpkin patch and farm park.

Activities

There are so many activities suitable for the whole family although some come with additional charges:

There are numerous different kind pumpkin-themed photo opportunities both before you walk along to the pumpkin-picking field itself. The pumpkins around the bus in particular are spectacular. In rows of different colours, all grown on-site. Other photo ops include a redneck swing, stocks, a piano and an orange door.
The sweet corn maze is amazing. With corn that is over eight feet high. To keep the kids entertained they have added some pirate-themed stations where you need to answer a question in the open spaces. Once you have collected all the answers you can pick up your own pirate gold on the way out. This does cost extra at £4 per person.
There is also face painting which costs £5 per child.
As well as the opportunity to enjoy a new take on the traditional tractor trailer rides. Via the barrel train. This did look a lot of fun. This also costs extra at £3 per person.
A daily magic show with Magic Martin and is included in the price of your ticket and runs at four intervals throughout the day. When we visited these were at 10.30 am, midday, 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm.

Facilities

You will be pleased to know that there are some toilets located at the entrance which are very clean. There are also several places to purchase food and drink in the takeaway kitchen and food trucks which are undercover. Including a coffee and doughnut stall selling various hot drinks, including hot chocolates.

There is also another stall selling all sorts of biscuits and cakes if you are after a sweet treat. Plus a pizza stall and a beef burgers and hot dog stand. The only thing I didn’t see was ice cream, although I am sure you can probably get some in the farm shop.

Cakes cost around £2 each. A hot dog is £4.95 and a cheeseburger £7.50. Onions are extra at 50p a portion. We tried out the burgers and hot dogs and they were really tasty and probably came from the country store itself.

The large pumpkin patch

You reach the pumpkin field by walking along a small pumpkin trail which gives you details of the different pumpkins you will find in the field.

The pumpkin picking area is really large with lots of different varieties of pumpkin to choose from. Especially out towards the back where many of them were still on the plants. Towards the front field, there was a selection of giant pumpkins which they had grown elsewhere and shipped in. As these were sitting on straw and mud and although the perfect pumpkin carving variety we did find that many of them had already gone over.

However, the ones on the plants were still really good despite the rain and that we were quite late in the season. Charlie was determined to find a giant pumpkin and we did eventually find one at the back of the pumpkin farm. It had bobbles all over it so he was very impressed with it.

I really liked hunting for all the little different gourds and pumpkins. However, if you would prefer to stay away from the mud then there is plenty of opportunity to pick pumpkins from the pumpkin village.

Opening times and prices

Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest is open daily throughout half term week and at weekends. This Devon pumpkin picking location is really popular and tickets do sell out.

You can book your entry ticket in advance online by picking a time slot. Regular hours are from 9 am in the morning, with the last entry being 2.45 pm. There is no need to book a timed slot for the Pirate maize maze, all you need to do is show your email confirmation to a member of the team. Although some families were buying their entrance on the day,

The admission charge for Strawberry Field Pumpkin Fest is a very reasonable £3 a person. Pumpkins vary in price depending on their size. This is tested at the checkout by placing hoops over the pumpkins. Prices start at £2.50 for the extra small and go all the way up to £15 for a giant pumpkin. We couldn’t resit their munchkin pumpkins which were £1.75 each or four for £6.

How long do you need at Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest

As we were passing through we only stayed for two and a half hours. Although I think that you can stay much longer as we didn’t have time for the magic show which was a shame. Or do any of the extra fall activities. Although we did have some hot food. I would allow at least four hours if you intend on doing the corn maze and take part in the tractor ride.

Top tips for your visit to Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest

Keep an eye on the Strawberry Fields Farm ShopFacebook Page and other social media channels for the latest information on the pyo pumpkins
We found that there were wheel barrows at the entrance to the family run farm. But there were not that many. So if this is important make sure you arrive early to grab yours.
Do not forget your wellies. I was surprised by how many people we saw in trainers. It was so muddy and the pumpkin field was pretty uneven ground.
The food and activities can only be paid for via debit or credit card. Cash is not being taken

We had a brilliant time at Strawberry Fields Pumpkin Fest, finding our ideal Halloween pumpkin. It is hands down one of the best places we have visited this season. With lots of outdoor fun to be had, it is perfect for younger children all the way through to teenagers. With Charlie hitting the tween stage even he was impressed, which is high praise as anyone else with an eleven old will testify.
