Walking Holidays With Kids – Things To Know

Walking Holidays With Kids

AD Guest Post

Walking holidays with the whole family can be an incredibly fun experience, full of adventure and learning. These holidays typically take place in one of the many Camino de Santiago routes across Europe. Although some of the routes are physically challenging, the others are perfectly suited for family holidays, providing that the kids are happy to walk. Of course, going with children means more planning and consideration, but the experience is 100% worth it! So, here’s what you need to know.

Choosing the right route

The Camino de Santiago is a revered network of pilgrimages leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwestern Spain. While it may seem daunting, certain sections of the Camino are fairly short and family-friendly.

The last 100 kilometres of the French Way, one of the most popular routes, for instance, offers a gentle terrain and plentiful services. Meanwhile, in Portugal, The Fishermen’s Trail, is a great choice for families, offering breathtaking coastal scenery.

When choosing the route, research the sites that you will be passing along the way. This is a great chance for your children to engage with the historical and cultural significance of these pilgrimage journeys, making them meaningful and educational. There are lots of routes to choose from, particularly for walking holidays in Portugal, Spain, and France.

Tips for a successful family walking holiday

  1. Preparation is key: Before you set off, involve your children in the planning process. Discuss the route and the landscape to excite them about the adventure ahead. Ensure that everyone’s footwear is well-broken in to avoid blisters and discomfort.
  1. Keep distances manageable: With kids, it’s wise to underestimate the distance they can comfortably walk. Plan for frequent breaks and consider stages no longer than 10 to 15 kilometres, depending on the age and stamina of your children.
  1. Engage and educate: Keep the journey interesting by teaching your kids about the natural surroundings and cultural landmarks. Activities like wildlife spotting, historical storytelling, or even a simple treasure hunt can enhance their experience.
  1. Pack essentials, not excess: Each member of the family should carry their own backpack, but keep them light. Holiday essentials include water, healthy snacks, sun protection, first-aid supplies, and perhaps a favourite lightweight toy or book.
  1. Safety first: Always check the weather forecast and trail conditions beforehand. Teach your children basic safety practices such as staying on the trail, recognising trail markers, and understanding what to do if they get lost.

Benefits of walking holidays for families

Walking holidays not only promote physical health but also mental well-being. Children learn resilience and gain a sense of accomplishment with each day’s trek completed. Additionally, these holidays detach family members from digital distractions, allowing for quality bonding time and fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment. Try to switch off your phones during the walks, to fully immerse yourself into the experience, and spend the holiday focusing and learning more about each other.

Final thoughts

A walking holiday can be a highly enriching experience for both parents and their young adventurers. As long as you research Camino de Santiago routes in advance and do your preparations, it will undoubtedly be a unique and rewarding trip for the whole family!
