7 Great Tips to Create a Low-Maintenance Garden That Looks Grea

This is a collaborative post

Everyone likes the feeling of spending time in their garden and being able to enjoy it. It helps you relax, get in tune with nature, and even spend an evening with friends and family having fun. But, making sure it stays this way often takes a lot of time and effort. Few people like the stress this comes with.

But, it doesn’t have to be nearly as hard as you’d think. You just need to create a low-maintenance garden. This takes a whole lot of work out of the process for you, and you could even end up having a nicer-looking garden than you already do.

And, creating this doesn’t have to take nearly as much time or effort as you’d expect. More than a few tips and tricks can help with this, as long as you’re willing to put a little effort into them. Seven of these could have a significant impact moving forward.

1. Pick Low-Maintenance Flowers

All plants and flowers need maintenance, but they don’t all need the same amount. Some will need noticeably less than others. Focusing on low-maintenance plants and flowers has a dramatic impact on how much time and effort you put into your garden. It should be noticeably less work.

This doesn’t have to mean you need to compromise on how they look, either. With how many options there are, you’ll find plenty of them that you like the look of and want to have in your garden. Look around, and you’ll find the best low-maintenance options for you.

2. Focus on Native Plants

Speaking of low-maintenance plants and flowers, native plants are always a part of this. These are the ones that grow in your local area already, and many of these could be found in the wild. Since they can do that, they shouldn’t need much maintenance once they’re planted in your garden.

It’s just a matter of giving them a little TLC when they need it. Usually, this will just be by watering it, pruning it every once in a while, and making sure it’s healthy. It’ll be easier than you’d think, and these could end up looking nicer than you’d think.

3. Invest in Your Tools

As low-maintenance as your garden could end up, you’ll always need to put some time and effort into it. You’ll still have to mow the lawn, trim the hedges, water your garden, and more. And, you’ll need gardening tools to help with all of this. These can have a significant impact on the time and effort your garden maintenance needs.

Options like an electric lawn mower help to take a lot of the work out of the equation, even if you still have to put in a little bit. If you just go for cheap options with this, they could end up being too much of a pain to use. You’re better off with quality options.

4. Plan for Seasonal Blooms

Not all plants and flowers bloom at the same time, and they’ll have different needs during certain times of the year. It’s worth keeping that in mind going forward. Just because something mightn’t need much maintenance now doesn’t mean that it isn’t the case during other parts of the year. They could need much more once they bloom.

Taking a mixed approach and having plants and flowers that bloom at different times of the year could help to keep your gardening work to a minimum. It’ll still need to be done at some point, but this avoids it becoming overwhelming, especially during the summer.

5. Consider Hardscaping

Larger gardens need noticeably more time and effort than smaller ones. It’s easy to see why, as there’s a lot more space, which usually means more plants and flowers to look after. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. Hardscaping parts of your garden is always an option.

This involves putting stone pathways and similar hard features around your garden. These don’t need much maintenance, and the right design makes sure they complement the rest of your garden. It’s always worth considering to help cut down on work.

6. Use Mulch to Reduce Weeds

Nobody wants to deal with weeds around their garden, but you could think you’ll just have to put up with de-weeding relatively regularly. You don’t. There are more than a few ways you can minimise this, with mulch being one of the more notable. It wouldn’t prevent them completely, but it’ll dramatically cut down on weeds.

And then there are the other benefits that this has. Mulch adds nutrients to the soil and helps it retain moisture, so your garden should be in a much better position to thrive as time goes on. You’ve every reason to put it around your garden.

7. Use a Watering System

Watering your garden is the most common garden maintenance task you’ll need to get done. As basic as this is, however, it takes a bit of work, and there’s always a possibility of doing it wrong. You could over- or underwater your garden, for example. Nobody wants either of these to happen.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be as hard as you’d think. Having a timed irrigation system takes all of the effort out of it for you. It’s just a matter of setting it up, setting it to work at the right intervals, and leaving it at that. There’s nothing to it.

You’ll want to create a low-maintenance garden for more than a few reasons. But, you could think this means making quite a few changes, and you might believe that your garden wouldn’t end up looking as nice as it used to. It doesn’t have to be that way, though.

Taking the right steps could be more than enough to help with this. Add in a few gardening tips, and it could end up being a lot more of a breeze than you’d think. You’ll have a low-maintenance garden before you know it, and it’ll end up looking amazing going forward.
