Guide to Erlebnis Sennerei in Mayrhofen Zillertal

Always on the hunt to do something different, Erlebnis Sennerei Zillertal ticked a few boxes. Both boys love cheese and like to understand how things are made. Charlie considers himself a bit of a foodie and enjoys tasting different things. Plus the fact that the factory has a large play area I knew Erlebnissennerei Mayrhofen would appeal to Harry.

Where is Erlebnis Sennerei Zillertal?

Erlebnis Sennerei is located just on the outskirts of Mayrhofen in the region of Zillertal in Western Austria. We stayed in Zillertal for a week while visiting Austria for two weeks in the Summer. Partially inside it is a good option for something to do if it rains. There is plenty of parking both out the front of the attraction and also at the back.

How much does it cost to visit Erlebnissennerei Mayrhofen?

Entrance costs for Erlebnissennerei Zillertal €12.50 for adults and €6.50 for children between the ages of 7-14. Under 7s are free.

What to expect when visiting Erlebnis Sennerei Zillertal

The attraction is split up into two main areas. The diary and factory, which also has a cafe and shop attached to it. And then the outside area is designed very much for the children with a petting zoo and play area.

The Erlebnissennerei Mayrhofen Dairy and Factory

We mistimed our visit and so did not see the factory and dairy in production, visiting in the afternoon after being up the Spielijoch mountain. This meant that we missed seeing the factory in production. Although the audio guide and videos gave us a good insight as to what we would have seen. It was interesting to understand how the cheese was made and how production changes through the course of the seasons. As well as understand the importance of cows in Austrian culture.

We also saw the branded Erlebnissennerei Zillertal milk tankers which Harry thought was very cool. And then moved to the packaging area and got the chance to taste some fresh hay milk (frische heumilch). Along with various different flavours of yoghurt including coffee. Which I thought was a bit of a strange taste. Although Charlie liked it. I much preferred the apricot and cranberry creamy yoghurt variety (cremige joghurtvielfalt).

After the tasting, the tour comes to an end and you find yourself back in the shop. Which is very large and has a wide variety of foodstuffs on offer. Including cheese, milk and yoghurt made in the factory. As we as other local foods and of course wine. You exit this part of the tour through the shop where you can take a piece of Zillertal home with you.

Petting Zoo and Play Area

Exiting the Erlebnissennerei Mayrhofen shop you turn left and walk up the road a short distance to the entrance to the petting farm. You need to scan your entry ticket to gain access. Here there are all different farm animals to visit. Including goats, cows, chickens and bunnies. It is possible to get some food to feed some of the animals. As well as meet the goats up close.

However, the boys were more interested in the play area. Which has a small go-kart track to race around. As well as a giant milk churn that has some climbing nets inside and slides on the outside. Harry was particularly pleased to see the go-karts and enjoyed racing his brother around.

What did we think of Erlebnis Sennerei Zillertal?

We spent about two hours at Erlebnis Sennerei. It is much more than a factory tour with the petting farm and play area adding something for the boys. Well located to combine with other attractions in and around Mayrhofen and Zell am Ziller. It goes to show all the different types of things you can do and is suitable for the whole family.

Charlie was a little disappointed that he did not get the chance to taste any cheese. Although the yoghurt partly made up for this. The only cheese tastings we could see were in the shop when looking to make a purchase.

Top Tips for a Visit

If you want to see the cheese factory in operation then you need to arrive before 2 pm. As this is when they normally stop production.
It looks as though they have an adult and a kids audio tour although we were only given the adults in English. If you visit it may be worth checking to see if there is an English kid’s version as we did not realise until we were inside that this was an option.
Make sure you have some drinks with you for the second part of the attraction, the petting zoo and play area. As there is nowhere to buy any and on a hot day there is little shade.
There are several animal food machines located around the petting zoo all take a 50c coin.
