These days, if you want a high-flying job, it’s almost imperative to get a college degree. If you don’t, it can be challenging to get the work that you want. This is especially true for young people currently going through the education system. Often, the idea and prospect of going to college aren’t particularly appealing to them, perhaps they don’t understand it or don’t see the value in it.
In this post, we look at some of the ways parents can make college more appealing to their kids. Here’s what to do:
Focus on autonomy and the fresh start
One of the ways to sell college to kids is to focus on the increased autonomy that they have. Most children go through their lives being told what to do, but when they get to college, they suddenly have a degree of freedom they never imagined was possible.
Remind them that in college they build their day and choose how they spend their time. Of course, they’ll need to concentrate on their work, but they also have much more freedom, especially if they’re now adults. They can also go to college with a fresh identity. They don’t have to bring the baggage of their past with them.
Separate academia from learning
Also, it’s a good idea to separate academia from learning. Many kids are burnt out with testing, essays, and homework, so more years of school don’t often sound that appealing.
The nice thing about college, though, is that it doesn’t force everybody to tick the same boxes. Educational programmes are often more varied and interesting, and professors are more engaging. You can direct them toward courses that will give them more hands-on experience, like workshops or laboratories. You can even send them abroad for student study programmes.
Tell them it will be a home away from home
Another tactic you can try is telling your kids that college would be more like a home away from home. Even though they’ll be living independently, they can still get access to luxury student accommodation.
Interestingly, when you sell the accommodation like this, it gives them a sense of ownership and even a sense of pride. They know they’re going somewhere high-quality where they can really enjoy a decent lifestyle.
Take them on low-stakes road trips
You could also look at taking them on low-stakes road trips. Instead of going on a formal tour, just go and hang out near the campus and see what they think. Once they see other students there laughing and enjoying themselves in their friend groups, it can change their perception of the experience.
Also, you might want to do a vibe check. If you go for lunch at the student union, you can see what the college is like as a whole. Your child will be able to quickly detect whether it is the right sort of place for them or not.
