We spotted Lindau when we were at the top of the Pfanderbahn Cable Car looking down on the lake views. Insel Lindau is the largest island in Lake Constance. During our 7 day holiday on the Bodensee, we visited a number of the well-known towns on the German and Swiss sides of Lake Constance. We enjoyed all of them but Lindau Island stole our hearts and I would like to return and spend more time exploring the old town.
Where is Insel Lindau located?
Nestled at the Eastern end of Lake Constance which is bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Known as Bodensee in German, Lake Constance is Central Europe’s third-largest lake. And provides a stunning backdrop to the medieval buildings and lively squares that make Lindau one of the most popular attractions. Because of its location, many think that Lindau Island is part of Austria. However, it is part of Southern Germany connected to the mainland of Bavaria by both a bridge and a causeway.
How to get to Lindau Island
When we visited we drove. Having visited the Bodense in the springtime it was not too busy. Which meant we could drive around the lake easily. During the Summer it can get very busy making driving nearly impossible. You are encouraged to use public transport wherever possible. If you have a tourist card which is normally given to you by your accomodation then this should give you free rides on the bus.
- Ferry: A unique way to travel is by taking a ferry trip across the Bodensee. It is worth checking in advance the timetable for the ferries and how long it will take to get to Insel Lindau. It is a wonderful scenic way to travel. The main operator on the Bodensee the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB), and timetables are available online.
- Train: We considered catching the train from where we were in Unteruhldingen. However, we could not make the times work. Deutsche Bahn operates regular train services to Lindau, making it accessible from major German cities and neighbouring countries. If you are travelling from Munich then the journey will take 2-2.5 hours by train.
Parking on Insel Lindu
There are several places to park in Lindau. We parked on the mainland and walked across the bridge. You can use the address Europaplatz/Landtorbrücke, 88131 Lindau to find the car park. If you arrive early then you may be able to park on the island. Because it is one of the most popular attractions on the lake it does get really busy. The largest car park that we found during our visit was referred to as P4. It looked like a large modern car park, you can use the address Inselhallenparkplatz, Zwanzigerstraße 6, 88131 Lindau to find it. Our car park costs €1.60 for an hour and then €0.80 for each half an hour thereafter. You could pay by card.
Is Lindau Island worth a visit?
Yes, it is most definitely worth a visit. Even with the kids who are not always the most eager to look around a new town. But with its proximity to the lake and consequently, beautiful lake views makes it really appealing. There is also a surprising amount to do and see.
Things to do in Lindau
I have broken this down into two distinct lists of things to see and do actually in Lindau. And then some other attractions which are close by which you may also want to visit.
Lindau Harbour and Lighthouse
Probably the most well-known view in Lindau Island is the harbour. Where you can see both the Bavarian Lion (Bayerischer Löwe) and the New Lighthouse (Neuer Leuchtturm). Both are located at the entrance to the harbour and are equally as impressive although the Bavarian Lion was the boy’s favourite. It is cast in bronze, and stands guard at six metres tall, symbolising the power and history of Bavaria. The lighthouse is the Southernmost lighthouse in Germany.
You can either sit in one of the many cafes and take in the view or you can walk around the perimeter and see them both up close. It is not possible to walk across from one to the other though. There is no bridge as it is still a working harbour so bear this in mind with little legs.
Also right on the harbour and sometimes missed is an old fortification called Mangturm which looks like a fairy tale tower. Reminiscent of something Rapunzel would throw her hair down from. It was built in the 12th century and used to protect the island before the rest of the harbour was fortified. It is quite an impressive structure.
Visit The Tourist Office
This may seem an odd one to have on the things to do in Lindau list. However especially if you are staying for a couple of days then make this your first port of call. It is opposite the train station so if you are arriving by train it is really convenient. As well as information about day trips and things to do nearby. You can also pick up a walking route of Lindau old town. It is free, and means that if you only have a few hours as we did you can see the main points of interest without worrying you are missing anything. Plus a map for kids to follow when exploring always seems to make things easier.

if it is closed when you arrive then there are several signs located around the town that show you a map and the main points of interest. At the places indicated, there are signs which give you information about the most popular attractions in the town.
The Charming Altstadt – Old Town
It is impossible to miss the old town. Since this is the main shopping area and also the place where you are likely to come across many eateries. There is a lot to see with many of the buildings having painted frescos on the outside. The main street is pedestrianised and called Maximilianstrasse. With cobblestones that have been preserved from the middle ages. From here there are narrow alley ways disappearing off. Take time if you can to explore these as we came across some beautiful signage and half-timbered houses. The roads are generally quiet and it was very reminiscent of places we have visited in Italy but without the hustle and bustle.
Old Town Hall
One of the painted buildings you will come across is the Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall. It is believed that the building has its origins in the medieval period and is a good example of the Baroque architecture that can been seen all over Southern Germany. it or It is simply beautiful with its elaborately painted facade and intricate details. Much of the artwork depicts the history of Lindau. Make sure you walk around the building. As well as leading you to a little square with a rather impressive fountain. I think that the building is even prettier when viewed from the back in the Bismarchplatz.
Lindavia Fountain
Also in the Bismatchplatz is the Lindavia fountain. She is known as the female embodiment of Lindau and is enthroned on her marble base with a crown suggesting the city wall and a rudder in her hand. She is accompanied by four bronze figures symbolizing local trades: shipping, fishing, horticulture, viticulture and agriculture. The fountain was inaugurated in 1884 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the coronation of the “fairy-tale king” Ludwig II. of Bavaria.
Stadtmuseum
On our visit, the Old Town Museum (also known as the City Museum) was closed as it is currently undergoing renovation. And from the looks of things it could be some time before it opens again. However, it is worth checking ahead of your visit on their website. The building once served as a monastery and is also elaborately painted. Once fully restored you will be able to see various artefacts and exhibitions which focus on the history and culture of the area.
Wander The Walls
As part of the walking route we picked up from the tourist office we walked around the island and along the walls. It was so pretty looking out across Lake Constance. On a goof day you get the lake views and also the Alps in the background. There are several lookout points which are worth aiming for. We even found a large play area which of course kept the children amused. As you get closer into the town again you come across these little bars and eateries right on the lake. They were pretty busy when we visited with people making the most of the early Spring sun while the blossom trees were full of bumble bees.
There are several places where you can enter the water if you want to swim. Although when we visited it was too early in the season for swimming. Yet the waters are very clear and almost turquoise in places so I can see the attraction in the Summer months.
Events and Festivities
Lindau like much of the Bodensee is home to a number of festivals throughout the year. If you are planning a visit then it is worth checking to see if one of these is on. Although it will make the town much busier and accommodation may be harder to find. The main festivals are:
- Children’s Festival – Held on the last Wednesday before the Bavarian summer holidays, the traditional Children’s Festival is celebrated throughout the city. At six in the morning at the crack of dawn, the firecrackers mark the start of the festivities. There are drummers and minstrels, wreaths of flowers, flags and traditional costumes. There is a ceremony and little ones receive their “Butschelle”. A sweet sultana pastry is only available on this day. As well as vouchers for the rides and traditional games at various spots across the town. In 2024, the Children’s Festival will be held on Wednesday 24 July.
- Dahlia Show – Every year from mid-August onwards, a fascinating, colourful sea of flowers awaits visitors in an area of around 13,000 square meters on Büchelewiesweg in the Lindau district of Reutin. With over 7000 plants and 800 species.
- Oktoberfest – As Lindau is located in Bavaria it also takes place in Oktoberfest which runs from the 30th of August to the 1st of September in 2024.
- Lindau Fun Fair – Traditionally fun fairs have only visited Germany in Spring and Autumn. Which is what makes this one so special. The colourful mixture of folk festivals, amusement parks and markets is a good opportunity to visit Lindau outside the main season. There are about 140 merchants and 60 showmen. In 2024 the dates are 8-12th of November.
- Lindau Christmas Market – Against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and directly on the waterfront. The Lindau Harbour Christmas is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the country. With live performers, plenty of wooden cabins and even special festive boat tours over the Winter period. Dates for 2024 are – 28th November to 22nd of December, from Thursday to Sunday, 11 am to 9 pm
Things to do near Lindau
We visited the Island of Lindau while staying in UnterUhldingen. Because of its direct access to the lake, there are plenty of nearby attractions that are within easy reach through a boat tour. Mainau Island
Also known as the ‘Flower Island’. It is one of the most popular attractions on Lake Constance. We visited it during our stay and fell in love with all the Spring flowers. However, no matter what time of year you visit the botanical gardens have a vibrant flower display. There is also much more to see with a butterfly house, large children’s play area, castle and even a small petting zoo. You can arrive by boat and take a scenic trip across the lake. Day Trip to Bregenz in Austria
Just across the border in Austria is Bregenz. We visited ahead of spending the afternoon in Lindau. I can recommend taking the Pfänderbahn cable car up to the Pfänder. From the top, we could look down and see the island. The mountain also offers panoramic views of Lake Constance and the surrounding Alps. Historic Towns Nearby
If you like historic towns then there are several close by:
- Friedrichshafen: Home to the Zeppelin Museum, this town offers a rich aviation history for us to learn about. The lakeside promenade is ideal for a leisurely stroll, while the viewing platform at the Zeppelin Museum offers striking views over Lake Constance.
- Konstanz: Imbued with medieval charm, Konstanz is a short boat trip away from Lindau. One can visit the imperious Konstanz Minster or meander through the old town, absorbing centuries of history with every step.
- Meersburg: The old castle in Meersburg, dating back to the 7th century, provides us with a glimpse into the medieval past. This town is known for its vineyards, with a wine museum, various tasting opportunities and vineyard tours available. Top Tips for a visit to Lindau Island
We really enjoyed our visit to Lindau Island. If you are thinking of doing the same then these tips will help you make the most of your visit.
- If you are driving during the peak Summer months then arrive early to make sure you get locate a parking space as it is a very popular destination. I would also thoroughly investigate both train and boat trips you can take to reach this beautiful island.
- Although there are plenty of places to eat, you may want to take a picnic to eat by the harbour when it is busy.
- Make sure you visit the tourist office for maps and other suggestions of things to do.
- It is possible to hire a bike and explore on two wheels. Bike tours are quite popular so keep an eye on little ones!
How long to spend in Lindau?
We only spent a few hours exploring the Island of Lindau. I would allow at least half a day. Although it is difficult not to fall in love with its Bavarian charm and want to stay longer. Especially if you intend on stopping for food and watching the world go by. If you are planning on going on a boat ride then you will want a full day giving you the chance to enjoy the sunset over Lake Constance which is simply stunning.
