Why getting outside is one of the best things you can do

AD Guest Post

There’s something magical about stepping outside – whether it’s a quick walk around the block or a proper adventure into the wilderness. The moment you feel fresh air on your face, everything seems to shift. Your shoulders drop. Your mind clears. You remember what it feels like to just be.

It’s not just in your head, either. Spending time outdoors has real, measurable benefits for both your body and mind. And the best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning and the right gear – like freeze-dried meals and decent outdoor equipment – getting outside becomes so much easier.

The physical perks of being outdoors

Let’s start with the obvious: your body loves being outside. Moving through natural spaces—whether you’re hiking, cycling, or simply wandering – gets your heart pumping and your muscles working. Regular outdoor activity can improve cardiovascular health, boost your immune system, and even help you sleep better.

Sunlight plays a huge role, too. Those rays aren’t just good for your mood – they’re essential for vitamin D production, which supports bone health and helps regulate your immune system. Just 15-20 minutes of sunshine a few times a week can make a real difference.

Fresh air is another underrated benefit. Spending time outside means breathing cleaner air (especially if you escape the city), which can improve lung function and help you feel more energised throughout the day.

The mental boost you didn’t know you needed

Beyond the physical benefits, nature does wonders for your mental well-being. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and improve overall mood. There’s something about being surrounded by trees, water, or open sky that helps reset your brain.

It’s called “green therapy” for a reason. Even a short walk in a park can lower cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone) and help you feel calmer. If you’ve ever noticed how much better you feel after a weekend away or a day by the sea, that’s your brain thanking you.

Outdoor time also encourages mindfulness. When you’re walking through a forest or sitting by a lake, you’re more likely to be present in the moment rather than scrolling through your phone or worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list.

Making it easier with the right gear

One of the biggest barriers to getting outside is thinking it has to be a big production. But honestly? It doesn’t. Having a few essentials on hand makes spontaneous adventures so much more doable.

Freeze dried meals, for example, are a game-changer for outdoor trips. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and ready in minutes – perfect for camping, hiking, or even just a long day out. No need to stress about meal prep or lugging heavy ingredients around.

Good outdoor equipment matters too. A comfortable backpack, sturdy shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing make all the difference between an enjoyable outing and a miserable one. You don’t need to spend a fortune – just invest in a few quality pieces that suit your favourite activities.

Start small and build from there

If you’re not used to spending much time outside, start small. A 20-minute walk in your local park counts. So does sitting on a bench with your morning coffee. The goal isn’t to become an extreme adventurer overnight – it’s just to get outside more often.

Once you’ve built the habit, you can start exploring further. Try a new trail. Plan a weekend camping trip. Pack a picnic and head somewhere you’ve never been. The more you do it, the easier it becomes – and the more you’ll crave that time outdoors.

Your body and mind will thank you

Getting outside isn’t just good for you—it’s one of the simplest ways to feel better, both physically and mentally. Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, improve your fitness, or just enjoy some peace and quiet, nature has you covered.

So grab your gear, pack a freeze-dried meal or two, and head out the door. Your next adventure is waiting – and it doesn’t have to be far from home.
