Charlie loves cooking and it is such an important skill that I do all I can to encourage him to spend time in the kitchen. He has always been good with food regularly trying new things. Harry on the other hand only eats beige food and has been a fussy eater for as long as I can remember. One of the ways we are trying to tackle his beige food addiction is to get him more involved with preparing the food. Hoping that in time it will encourage him to eat more different types and so expand his palette. So I was delighted when I heard about Sammy Satsuma and his kid’s personalised cook book. As I hoped their own recipe book may help with both of these things. So how did we get on with the childrens personalised recipe book?

ToggleKids personalised cook book from Sammy Satsuma
Sammy Satsuma came about when two fathers decided to try and help their fussy eaters make healthier choices. Sammy Satsuma and his fruit and vegetable friends introduce healthy eating subtly. Through a series of personalised books. Their most recent is a children’s personalised recipe book. I knew that Charlie would love to have his own cook book. And I hoped he would be able to help his brother expand his tastes. And with three weeks left of the Summer holiday, I am also hoping it will help keep them entertained.

How to personalise your childrens personalised recipe book
Ordering your kid’s personalised cook book from Sammy Satsuma could not be easier. It is all done online in a matter of minutes. To start you create a cartoon avatar that features on the front cover of the book, along with their name. Which also appears in a poem and throughout the book, recipes and narrative. First, you choose the gender of the avatar, before choosing skin tones, hair colour, hairstyle and eye colour. At the end, you can also add glasses and freckles.
The recipe choice
Once you have added your child’s name you then go on to choose the family recipes you would like to include in the personalised recipe book. There are twenty-six delicious recipes which have been created by award-winning chef Jo Platt. There is a choice of starters, main meals and desserts all of which are family-friendly and something that the whole family can enjoy. You can choose ten recipes. When we created our book the boys chose their favourite recipes:
- Buster’s banana chocolate chip muffins
- Lenny Lemon’s yoghurt cake
- Mo Mango’s chicken curry
- Pedro Pepper’s chicken fajitas
- Peggy Pea’s pea and courgette fritters
- Sammy Satsuma’s upside-down cake
- Sidney Squash’s Moroccan tagine
- Sidney Squash’s special soup
- Tommie Tomato’s simple meatballs
- Peggy Pea’s baked risotto
Using our personalised cookbook
Of course, the boys could not wait to get started making one of the recipes out of their book. Each recipe comes with a little poem about the character and the recipe. A full-sized, full color picture, a list of ingredients and a method covering detailed instructions. Each recipe also gives you details of the activity time (prep time) and cooking time to help plan. I also really like that there is a top tip for each recipe. Which gives suggestions on how to change the recipe or swap in other ingredients.
As time was short Charlie chose to make Buster’s banana chocolate chip muffins first. He found the recipe really easy to follow and made it all without help, having so much fun along the way. Telling his little bother what he was doing at each step. They came out really well and the end result tasted very yummy and didn’t last very long…

Things we love about our Sammy Satsuma kid’s personalised cook book
There are lots of things which we loved about the personalised cookbook.
- It is so easy to create and order you can do it in a couple of minutes which is ideal if you are looking to create a quick personalized gift.
- The book arrived really quickly by royal mail and the quality is really good. Each page is laminated which means it will stand up to all sorts of spills and mess created by little hands when they are cooking.
- The instructions and method for each recipe are explained in a very simple way. With a large type which is easy to read and follow.
- There are QR codes throughout the book which give direction on things such as how to line a cake tin, or how to prepare a butternut squash. Making it an interactive book.
- the personalised cookbook also comes with a sheet of stickers of the characters involved in the book. As well as an extra recipe to make tomato sauce packed full of vegetables.
The only thing that I would like to see is the ability to add another child to the personalised element of the book. Harry is already asking for one of his own!
Our Conclusions
The boys loved Sammy Satsuma’s childrens personalised recipe book it would make a great gift. Harry has already tried different foods and is a lot more interested in the different ingredients that go into making them. While the recipe book gives our little chef Charlie the confidence to cook the meals with very little adult input. He really loves having his own cookbook. The personalised cookbook costs £34.99 and can be ordered directly from their website.
