If you are looking for the best Valentine’s Day gift for your pregnant wife or daddy-to-be. Or even if you are a new parent and it is your baby’s first Valentine then I have the best Valentines gift for you. I have even given this wonderful gift to my own children. I hope in time they will give it to theirs. It will make the perfect gift no matter what stage of pregnancy your pregnant mama is at. I am suggesting that the book Guess How Much I Love You written by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram. Which is a beautiful keepsake gift that has gorgeous sentimental feelings attached to it. And is a good choice for a thoughtful pregnancy gift.
As pregnant women, we fall in love with our babies while they are still in our tummies. But no one can prepare you for the intensity of the feeling or how that feeling deepens when you hold them in your arms. The same can be said for the partners of those ladies, the dads or mums-to-be. Guess How Much I Love You make a thoughtful gift for expectant parents or those with a new baby. As it tries to quantify that love in measurements that even the youngest members of the family can understand.

I can still remember that it was the first book that I bought when I was expecting Charlie. I am sure I am not alone with many a pregnant woman choosing this book. It is hard to resist the sing-song nature of the verses or the beautiful watercolour illustrations which will make much better valentine’s gifts than a gift card, pregnancy lingerie or dare I say a spa day. It is also perfect for young children to read.
Like many expectant mums-to-be, I was looking for things to add to his nursery not realising I was starting something really special. Even now when the boys are aged 10 and 6 we quite often say to each other ‘We love you to the moon and back’. Both to me and their dad. I have also lost count of the number of times it has been written in little love notes, a card for a special occasion or just said in passing when someone is having a bit of a rough day. It is definitely a quote that will stay with us throughout our lives now. And I am sure I am not alone and that this is the experience of many a first-time mom.
We have several copies of the picture book which has become a very important keepsake and hopefully will be passed down through the generations of our family. To one book lover to another.

So what is so special about Guess How Much I Love You?
I first chose the book for Charlie’s nursery as it really appealed to me when I was about six months pregnant. With its beautiful words and gorgeous illustrations. It tells the adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare who is getting ready to go to bed. Before he can go to sleep, the little hare needs to make sure that Big Nutbrown Hare knows how much he loves him. The story progresses as each character gets bigger and bigger in the analogies they are using to try to verbalise their love and mutual affection for each other. With our beloved Nutbrown Hares quoting…
‘I love you as high as I can reach’
‘I love you all the way up to my toes’
‘I love you as high as I can hop’
‘I love you across the river and over the hills’
‘I love you right up to the MOON….. AND BACK’
Now I am a Mummy
Now as a parent, I can completely understand the back-and-forth conversation between the characters as the older of the two tries to conjure the younger into bed. As a parent, I have done that a lot over the years! Reading the beautiful 400-word story makes me smile as I can now relate to how Big Nutbrown Hare was feeling. Sometimes when I am really struggling at bedtime I will refer to the words. Which we know by heart it can be the perfect way to calm them down ready for the land of nod.
The story is one that I used to read to both boys when they were tiny and over the years at bedtime. As they snuggled down trying to fight sleep and quite often joining in as Little Nutbrown Hare. It is a great book for little readers with simple words and an easy-to-read typeface. Harry will still on occasion read it to me. So it still adorns the shelves along with all the fiction chapter books they both read. Guess How Much I Love You book really does have a long shelf life. It really is these little things that count in the parenthood journey. And we have been very lucky to have had a special time reading this book.

Best Valentine’s Day gift for your Pregnant Wife
Although it really does make the best Valentine’s Day gift for your pregnant wife or expectant parents. I remember that one Mother’s Day I got a Little Nutbrown Hare with a little message tag placed around its neck, which was a great gift. The small soft toy still adorns my desk. A constant reminder of parenthood and the feeling of parental love that really can stretch all the way to the moon and back.
I am not sure I will ever put the book away into a box with all their other picture books. I can not bring myself to remove it. Although I am guessing that at some point it will no longer be cool! At this point, it will be put away for the future. So hopefully one day I will be able to read it to a grandchild or they may even take their copy to read with their own children. So that they can truly understand the love that a parent feels.
Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift for Children
As well as being one of the best gifts for a new mom. The book would also make the best present for a child. I always try and do something special for the boys for Valentine’s Day. I encourage them to make homemade cards for their friends and family. They quite often have pink pancakes for breakfast and of course, I will buy them a little card and some chocolates and perhaps even a keepsake. If you’re looking to do something for your children this Valentine’s Day then if you do not already have it. A copy of Guess How Much I Love You would make a good option for an inexpensive keepsake. A good idea would be to add your own personal message at the beginning of the book.
