8 Original Ways to Celebrate Valentines Day at Home. We have been celebrating Valentines Day at home now for the last eight years. Ever since Charlie was born. Partly because of the convenience. And partly because I can never quite agree with spending a fortune on a set menu. Only to be able to have the exact same menu a week later for half the price. This year will be no different especially as we are still in lockdown here. But that doesn’t mean that we can not celebrate. This post contains 8 Original Ways to Celebrate Valentines Day at Home along with some ideas of things to do with the kids. And a couple of other things that we always do.
8 Original Ways to Celebrate Valentines Day at Home
- Create a time capsule. This could be in the form of a notebook of memories or a container full of photos, tickets and trinkets. Either since you got together or over the last year. Bringing all the items together is a great way to relive the memories.
- Home scavenger hunt. Leave little clues around the house directing the recipient to the next riddle to find their prize. They can be as romantic or as silly as you like. I know a friend that proposed in this way!
- Have a bake-off. Valentines Day is synonymous with sweet treats so why not challenge each other to a bake-off. With the kids or friends voting virtually for the winner.
- Make a bucket list. It is difficult at the moment because we can not travel anywhere or do anything outside our local area. But it will not always be like that. So make a bucket list of the things you want to do and places you want to go once lockdown is lifted. Of course, if you would prefer you can make a lockdown bucket list as a couple instead.
- Watch the sunrise. There is something romantic about watching the sunrise and the new day appear. It may be a little cold in February but you could always create a voucher to use on a future date.
- Have a go at truffle making. Truffle making sounds more exotic than chocolate making and something that does not need complex ingredients to have a go at home. With many online videos and instructions, you could have a go at making your partners favourite flavours.
- Stargazing. This time of year it may be cold outside but nights can be really clear. So it is an ideal opportunity to do a bit of stargazing. You will need to make sure there is no light pollution and can use an app to help in your discoveries
- Wine and cheese night. Why not take time to try some different wine and cheese pairings. Firstly it doesn’t take much organisation so one of you doesn’t need to cook. Secondly, after a big meal, the cheese never gets eaten so skip that bit and enjoy the cheese. Thirdly there is something decadent about buying cheese which is not the standard cheddar in the kid’s school sandwiches.
Other ideas to make Valentines Day special during lockdown
- Breakfast in Bed. It would not be Valentines Day without breakfast in bed. With a personalised Moonpig Valentines Day Card and a beautiful bouquet of red roses.
- Make an effort. Especially at the moment, it is far to easy to spend the day in casual clothes, hair scraped back and no makeup. - Try something virtually. There are absolutely tons of ideas of things you can now dow on a virtual basis. Including concerts, museum tours, wine tasting and cooking lessons to name a few. With so much choice there is bound to be something to suit. Although if you can not make your mind up then you could go for a Moonpig at-home date night experience. - Set the scene. With a real fire, candlelight and beautiful scents.
8 Ideas on how to make Valentines Day special for kids
- Pink heart-shaped pancakes. I can not take the credit for this. A close friend from the States does this every year for her boys. Making pink pancakes in a heart shape and serving them with strawberries. Sounds like a great Valentines breakfast to me!
- Film afternoon. Let the kids pick some suitable valentines films for an afternoon film-a-thon.
- Play board games. Getting everyone away for tech, phones and tablets and spend time together playing games around the kitchen table. Both of the boys love a board game and as long as a certain person wins it makes for a nice afternoon.
- Do some Valentines crafts. It goes without saying that crafts play a large role in helping prepare for Valentines Day in our house. So much so that I have recently written a post sharing 20 Easy Valentine Day Crafts for Kids.
- Have an indoor picnic. There is something special about having a picnic on the lounge floor with picnic themed Valentine food and battery-powered tea lights.
- A bonfire, or fire pit and toasted marshmallows. The boys love a bonfire or firepit and since it is still getting dark early its an ideal late afternoon activity. And of course, if you are going to have a fire pit you need to toast marshmallows and have smores…
- Have a chocolate fondue. Even if you don’t have a fondue set the kids will still enjoy dipping fruit and marshmallows in melted chocolate.
- Dance around the kitchen. Put their favourite tunes on and dance around the kitchen and have your own mini disco.

These are fab ideas. I do think it’s important to make an effort, and if certainly shouldn’t cost a fortune! However nothing wrong with making an effort for you and the kids. It’s good to celebrate to show your children to make an effort too.
Me and husband have only left the house 3 times in the last year as we have been shielding our 10 year old who is clinically extremely vulnerable, so a bit of a romantic treat wouldn’t go a miss, think I might treat him to something like this for Valentine’s Day x
