Firefly Young Driver Review a driving lesson for a five-year-old. I never thought that Monkey would be learning to drive at the tender age of five! He literally has only just turned five a couple of weeks ago so is probably one of the youngest kids to have tried out the Firefly with
Young Driver. When we told Monkey he was going for a driving lesson he was really excited and couldn’t wait. However, as we walked across the tarmac at Kempton Park Race Course the nerves started to kick in and he wanted us to accompany him around the circuit. I did suddenly think to myself perhaps this is a mistake, perhaps he is too young.

Once we at the desk and started talking to one of the instructors he relaxed when he realised he wouldn’t be in the car alone at any point. They had three cars lined up but we were the only one on the road system. There was a course laid out with cones, which even had a roundabout in the centre. I’m not sure why but I was surprised to see the real road signs! Initially, the instructor showed us around the car, told Monkey what made it go and more importantly what made it stop.
They then went around the course together and the instructor showed him the signs and what they meant when he should stop and taught him how to steer. He seemed to get the hang of it pretty quickly the look of concentration on his face was brilliant. The only thing he struggled with was feeding the steering wheel through his hands instead he steered in one motion.
Driving mummy around the track
I think this was because he doesn’t have the upper body strength needed. Once he had gone round with the instructor a couple of times it was my turn. It was a little nerve-wracking as the electric car can go up to ten miles per hour and he seemed to forget everything that the instructor had told him once I got in the car! He really enjoyed driving mummy around for a change, especially when we got to the road-a-bout.

After my turn, he then took Daddy in and seemed to do much better with him, which makes me wonder if that’s something to do with my driving!! The lesson is twenty minutes in total which included the instructor brief at the beginning. The reason they keep it to twenty minutes is that they start to lose concentration after that period of time. Although Monkey was really enjoying it you could tell he was getting a little tired.
Getting his own driving licence
At the end of the process, he got a little plastic drivers license which he needed to sign. He was so proud of his licence that he intends on taking it to school for show and tell. At the end of our lesson, we were told that if we come back next time he could start to learn about manoeuvres such as parallel parking. Of course that’s all we have had since… Mummy when am I going to have another driving lesson? So I am taking that the driving lesson was a huge hit and that we will be back for more.

The two-seater cars were especially styled for Young Driver, featuring independent suspension, disc brakes, twin electric motors, rack and pinion steering, indicators and headlights – making them drive and handle just like real cars on the road. It’s a great idea to have them available for older children in real cars so they can get a feel for it before they go out on the road.

Oh my goodness my River would love this!! He’s only 2 so way too young, but I still think he’d give it a good go. We have to be careful with our own cars as I’ve found him trying to put the key in the ignition before!! #BloggerClubUK
