Golden Eagle Zipline in Durness Good to Know

When we went on our road trip around the North Coast 500 in the Summer. I did some research about the best things to do with kids and one of the things that came up was the Golden Eagle Zipline at Durness. If you are planning on visiting the most northerly zipline yourself then I have pulled together all the things you need to know.

Golden Eagle Zipline Durness

Location

• The zip line goes from one side of the cliff top to the other, giving amazing ocean views across Ceannabeinne Beach.
• It is in Durness which is in the North-West Highlands, in the traditional county of Sutherland. Around 120 miles (190 kilometres) north of Inverness. Use the postcode IV27 4QE in the sat nav.

Practical information

• There are car parks at both ends of the zipline and another opposite Ceannabeinne Beach. All are quite small, but we had no problems parking. Car parks are generally free on the NC500 and this is no different, although see the individual signs for details of overnight parking. 
• There is a sign that directs you up to the top of the cliff to the start of the Golden Eagle Zip Line. You can drive up here if needed.
• The zip line costs £15 per person and is payable by cash or via PayPal before getting on. There is no need to book; you just turn it up. When we visited we did not need to wait long for our zipline flights. There is a cash point in the next village.
• Please be aware that it is weather dependent. So it is best to keep an eye on their Facebook page to see if the weather conditions allow it to run.

Things to do nearby

• Ceannabeinne Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on the NC500. It makes a wonderful place to stop after all the excitement of the zipline. When we visited the boys enjoyed playing in the sea splashing about in the long shallow waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
• If you are heading West then you will come across Smoo Cave which we went onto visit after our experience on the zipline. A little further on is Balnakeil Craft Village where you can apparently pick up the best hot chocolate in the UK.
• If you are travelling East you will come across the Kyle of Tongue. We spent some time here when the tide was out enjoying looking for fish and crabs with their nets.
