Wassenaar Beach in the Netherlands – Wassenaarseslag

When we visited Duinrell Holiday Park staying with Eurocamp we knew we wanted to cycle to a beach. As it has been a while since I have been on a bike I did not want anything too far away. So opted for the local beach Wassenaar Beach, also known as Wassenaarse Slag or Wassenaarseslag. Which was under four kilometres away and the closest beach to where we were staying. Turned out to be one of the best things to do close to Duinrell. Read on to find out how to get from Duinrell to Wassenaar Beach.

Where is Wassenaar Beach located?

Located in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. It is situated in the town of Wassenaar, which is just a short distance from The Hague. The beach stretches for several kilometres and is known for its soft sand, clear water and picturesque dunes. It is between two other of the best beaches in the area Scheveningen and Noordwijk. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we did not have a chance to visit either of these popular Dutch North Sea beaches. But plan to on our next visit.

How do you get to Wassenaar Beach?

It is really easy to cycle to Wassenaarseslag. I was a little worried as Harry is a tad accident-prone and not used to cycling on the roads. So was relieved to find that most of the way from Duinrell to Wassenaar beach it is a cycle path. There is only one point where you cycle next to a road. If you are coming from Duinrell you turn left out of the campsite and then left again at the junction. It really is as simple as that. Part of the route is through tree-lined streets which is very pleasant. It took us around twenty-five minutes as there was one hill which Harry needed to walk up not having any gears on his bike. The boys were aged seven and ten when we visited.

You can of course walk to the beach which will take around forty-five minutes according to google maps. However, having met a family that did do this, they suggested it took them much longer than what google maps indicated.

The alternative is to drive from Duinrell to Wassenaarseslag. There is a large car park right next to the beach which is called Zeelust. Although in the summer months, it is very popular. So I would suggest arriving early to ensure a space. You can use the postcode 2242 PG Wassenaar. This was the only car park we found when we visited. However, there is another close by called De Kuil which can be reached using the postcode 2242 PJ Wassenaar. When we visited the charges were €10.00 for the whole day if arriving before 6 pm or €5.00 for the evening.

It is difficult to reach Wassenaar beach resort by public transport. The best option would be to get a bus into the town of Wassenaar and then hire a bike to reach the beach.

What facilities are at Wassenaarse Slag?

I was expecting a simple white sandy beach. However, what we found was a beautiful strip of sand backed by beach bars and beach restaurants. There are also some food trucks as you walk down from the car park. Selling Dutch snack food and ice creams. And if you have forgotten your bucket and space then fear not as this is also catered for. There are even some beach cabins at the end of the row of restaurants which look as though you can hire them out.

The bars and restaurants look very appealing with sofa-like seating and plenty of parasols overlooking the beach. We stopped for something to eat in one and although not cheap it was on par with other places we stopped for lunch during our break. Some of them also have small play equipment to entertain the kids. As well as perspex windbreaks so you don’t have to worry about sand being blown into your food.

There is everything I would expect to find on a well-maintained beach. Plenty of rubbish bins, toilets with baby change facilities and showers in the beach pavilions. Even a concrete path runs in front of the restaurants.

Top Tips for a Visit to Wassenaar Beach

Bring a kite the Wassenaarse Slag is quite windy all year round so perfect for kite flying.
Don’t forget your camera the dunes are truly stunning.
The sea will likely be too rough to swim for little ones so plan things to do at the beach that do not include going in the water with children.
Wassenaarseslag is popular with Kite Surfers and a kite surf school is on the beach. Which could be an option for strong swimmers and older teenagers or adults.
There are plenty of walking and cycling trails which you can enjoy through the dunes. Or if you are like Harry then you can just roll down them.
Allow at least half a day to enjoy and stop for a cold drink
