15 Flower Field Photo Props for Kids. Let me start by telling you I am not a professional photographer. I have done the odd course over the years and do own a DSLR but most of the pictures I take are actually on my mobile phone. Like many parents when trying to wrangle young kids I just do not have the time or the knowledge to make sure the settings are right on the camera.  My whole approach to photographing the boys is trying to keep things flexible, easy and natural. If that is your photography style then this is the post for you.

I should also say that these ideas do not include long drawn out posing sessions. Or the need to carry around any reflective surfaces. Although I do share pictures of the boys in Instagram they are not very curated. But they do create wonderful memories. However, the problem I have always found when taking pictures is keeping them entertained, giving them something to focus on while I snap away.  Here are some things which I have found helpful. All of which you are most likely to have already at home.  

15 Flower Field Photo Props for Kids

All of these work well regardless of the type of flowers you are trying to capture, be that poppies, bluebells, lavender, sunflowers or even the Confetti Fields. 

Lollies

Not the frozen kind but the big bright sugary kind! The bigger and brighter the better. These definitely give kids something else to focus on. I have used them with both of the boys when I want them to stand still. But also avoid that ‘smile’ or ‘cheese’ at the camera which looks more like a grimace when they are little.

Bubbles

Whether they are bubble wands or just the regular kind. Not only do they provide entertainment but they make great pictures for kids of all ages including little ones. 

Balloons

I have long been known to snap pictures of the boys on their birthdays with a corresponding numbered ballon. Although photos with a simple coloured helium balloon are more classical and can add a pop of colour depending on the colour of the flowers. 

Balls

A brightly coloured beach ball or even a football threw in the air at an opportune time can add extra interest to a photo. 

Books

A studious photo deep in concentration while they read their favourite book. Also gives you a chance to record their favourite books at the same time. 

Paper Aeroplanes

So much fun can be had to chasing a paper aeroplane or thrown between each other. Simple, effective and costs next to nothing.

A Kite

Flying kites is a childhood pastime that I love to photograph and if you find the right field in the right location it can help fill the sky.

Rugs

Something to sit on to avoid the moaning! Although think about colour and location. A subtle coloured blanket that blends into the forest floor on a bluebell shoot, maybe a better option than your traditional picnic rug.

Apples

Or any other kind of fruit that you need to bite into. Snacks are always good and can make good photo opportunities. 

A Lens-Ball

This may be something that you don’t exactly have lying around the house. But if you love photography then it could be a good investment. Especially when held in little hands. But if this is your intention then think about the size as they can be very heavy.

Handheld Telescope

A game of pirates in the poppies. The more old fashioned looking the telescope the better. Dress up is also a good option although I would opt for traditional dress up more than the latest craze so that your photos do not date.

Magnifying Glass

Get up close and personal with the flowers, spot bugs and learn how they are made. And while they are absorbed with learning snap away. 

Sunglasses

Useful to have regardless if they are an intentional prop or not. If the sun it is bright they can shield little eyes and stop that squint into the camera.

Love Hearts

Still one of my favourite photos dirty fingernails and all. A picture of childhood [see below]

White Clothing

If you have it will always stand out more against the flowers. A linen shirt or dress in the Summer. For the boys, I favour Brenton style tops with navy shorts or trousers. 

How To Display Your Flower Photos

Once you have captured beautiful photos of your little ones in amongst the flowers then what? As much as it is nice to share your pictures on social media sometimes you can not beat displaying them at home. Our house is full of pictures of the boys they are wonderful keepsakes reminding us of many special times.  We are a fan of photo books, they are a great way to update our home without breaking the bank. Avaliable in a wide range of shapes and sizes you are bound to find one that fits your requirements. Why leave your masterpieces on your phone when they look so much better on your coffee table?
