Burg-Wächter FireProtect FP44E Safe Review. We have been meaning to get a safe for the longest time. Ever since Charlie was born which is now nine years ago. But to be honest I haven’t known where to start. Or what we really needed and have not given it the consideration it deserves. This is where Burg-Wächter comes in. Not only have they a wide range of security products – everything from padlocks, electronic door locking systems and video security to key safes, post boxes to safes. But they also have plenty of choices in each area. Meaning that you can find something that meets your requirements.
What items should you put in a home safe?
We have reached the time in our lives when we have things that we want to protect. Don’t get me wrong we are not sitting on piles of expensive jewellery. But we do have a few items of sentimental importance. Small items that we have been left on the death of a loved one. My wedding jewellery which after twelve years is now seriously out of fashion and so never gets worn. But I would hate anything to happen to it. Envisaging one day that I may gift it onto the boys or my goddaughter.
Then there are documents, birth certificates, our wedding certificate, passports, a copy of our will. The things that should the house catch a light you would want to rescue. Partly because to get them replaced would be a whole load of stress and hassle. As well as the expense associated with doing so. A list of passwords for financial matters should anything happen to one or other of us. Morbid maybe. But sensible. To make life as easy as possible for the remaining spouse.
Finally, there are sentimental things that can simply not be replaced. Special photos of family members who have passed. Memory sticks with videos of the boys when they were tiny. Our backed up hard drive. House insurance does a good job at protecting you financially but what about the things that can not be replaced. That’s what we will be putting in our safe.
Things to consider when choosing a safe
Because the Burg-Wächter website is so informative it was easy to narrow down what we needed. First of all, we knew we wanted a free-standing safe. Not a wall safe. We did not have a suitable place to put a wall safe and I did not want the stress of fitting it. So we opted for a free-standing one but with the ability to secure it to the floor. This was essential for us, since having a safe that could not be secured defeated the object in our minds. And something we had come up against when looking at different options before. The Burg-Wächter FireProtect FP44E safe allows you to secure it ….. through the base plate.
The other feature that we were keen to have was that it needed to be fireproof. Because of the items we want to put in the safe, we want peace of mind that they will be protected should the worst happen. This was essential. We also wanted a safe with an electronic keypad, as we can’t be trusted with a key. Knowing us we would lose it within the first couple of weeks. And finally, it needed to be compact, easy to move around (not weigh an absolute ton) and look modern. That is how we settled on the Burg-Wächter FireProtect FP44E safe.
Features of the Burg-Wächter FireProtect FP44E Safe Review
The FireProtect FP44E is a good size for a home safe measuring 296mm x 390mm x 320mm. It is not too big that it is difficult to place in your home. But large enough to be able to fit A4 documents inside. With an empty weight of 25kg, it is easy to move around the house and into its final position. The safe is designed to protect against burglary and fire.
- It has been tested against fire protection, class NT FIRE 017-60 P. So what does this mean, the safe will give at least 60 minutes of fire protection for paper. This protection has been tested up to 1,000 degrees celsius.
- The body and door are double-walled, meaning that the solid lining is fully insulated.
- Specially designed fire fold
- The safe has an electronic combination lock with LCD display which is clearly visible from the top of the safe. It also has two freely selectable user codes. This means that the husband and I can both set a code each that we will remember. With security in mind, the code is not shown when entered.
- You open the safe with a rotary knob meaning that it is easy to open and use.
- Designed for documents up to A4 in size, space is maximised but the addition of a drawer comes with necessary internal fittings. It is useful to be able to separate items within the safe and make the most of the space.
- To ensure it is burglary proof, the safe has been pre-prepared for fixing to the floor and all the fixing materials are included in the box.
- It also comes with four AA batteries, it does not need mains power and can be used straight away.
Where to put our safe
I would imagine our three bedroom semi-detached cottage is a pretty typical family home for a young family. We do not have a huge amount of space. So this was the key consideration when choosing where to put the safe. We also did not want it on view either to people coming into the house or from a window. This also included the boys. As knowing them they would not be able to resist fiddling with it.
As it came with the ability to secure it to a floor we decided that a cupboard or wardrobe would be the best solution. Especially as it does not need to be near the mains supply. Ideally securing to the floorboards. We are fortunate that we have the ability to do this. But if you do not have any built-in cupboards then you could also consider putting it in the loft and securing it to the boards.
The FireProtect FP44E comes with the fixtures required to secure it to the floor. My husband found this relatively easy to do and it gives us peace of mind when it comes to burglary protection.

We’ve been looking to get a safe as well. Not sure if we want a free standing one like yours or a wall safe, though.
I’ve never thought about a safe for the house before – always use on holiday! Really good idea and this one looks great and really robust. Perfect to keep your things secure.
We have a home safe as well that we’ve had since before getting married. We wanted a lot of the same features, including being fireproof and waterproof (Houston floods a lot). Ours uses a key, though I like the keypad so you don’t have to worry about the key. Ours is secured to the ground as well. I had looked into a fingerprint safe but they are way out of the price range we were looking at.

Being a diplomat, I am posted in places around the world to advance the diplomatic mission of my nation. Sometimes, these aren’t the safest of places. One of the first things I purchased upon entering this lifestyle was a safe. The protection of my most important documents and valuables is critical for me. Doing all I can to minimize the worst-case scenario is important.

I have never considered a safe. Not really sure why. We keep our ID docs on us all the time and I need the kids birth certificates pretty regularly so they are always in my family file on my desk. I can’t think what else I would put in a safe!
I think I would go with stand safe as well because in case need to change the place or something.

We have always made sure to keep a safe. We put in Porten documents in this along with money and similar. We’ve also told our son that he should be doing the same.
