Review abode Kitchen Sink & Tap

AD Gifted – we were gifted the abode Kitchen Sink & Tap in return for this blog post, all words and opinions are my own.

Review – abode Kitchen Sink & Tap. We moved into our house 13 years ago. It is about 100 years old and had been done up by a developer at that time. Only once we had started living in it did we realised pretty quickly the quality of the workmanship was not the best. Although we rectified this in many of the rooms of the house we never quite made it to the kitchen. And once we had the boys home improvements got put on the back burner.

When they were a bit older we did think about it again but then decided we would move instead this was about three years ago. Well for one reason or another that move has never happened. And because of where we find ourselves with pandemic I can not see that changing in the near future. So with all the time, we have been spending at home we have been focusing on home improvements. Starting with putting in a huge veggie patch at the end of the garden and decorating the boy’s rooms. The next room on our hit list is the kitchen.

Review abode Kitchen Sink & Tap

Like many family homes, our open plan kitchen diner is at the centre. More so than ever with us all working and homeschooling from there too. So I want a practical yet stylish space so that we can when allowed entertain friends with pride. Although the thought of ripping the whole kitchen out and being without it for several weeks is just too much to take on. So we have decided to do it little by little.

One of the first jobs we wanted to start with was sprucing up the work surfaces and getting a new sink and tap fitted. The husband has tried to fix our kitchen tap three times in the last two months and not really succeeded. It has just got to the point where it needs replacing. So when abode got in contact and asked if we would like to try out a new tap and sink I was delighted.

Choice & Delivery with abode

Realising that we did not have to rip the whole kitchen out and could do it bit by bit was actually quite liberating. But it did create the problem of choice and trying to visualise the finished design. As there will be elements of mismatch all the way through the project. This is why I was so pleased to see the amount of choice available on the abode website.

Our Sink – Xcite One and a Half Bowl & Drainer Sink

We settled on a sink in grey metallic granite. Although they also offer stainless steel, black granite and white ceramic designs. Wanting a simple as possible installation and not wanting to change our wooden work surfaces we narrowed down the search for one the same size as our current sink. Because all the dimensions are available on the website this is surprisingly easy to do. By doing this we also knew that the configuration of our under sink cupboards would also be okay.

I particularly like the modern square designs and wanted an unfussy draining board and so settled on the Xcite One and a Half Bowl & Drainer Sink in Grey Metallic Granite. Having the half sink is so convenient when washing up and preparing food. Each plug also has a strainer attached and simple push down to close mechanism. I also really like is that you can also download a brochure direct from the website and find your nearest stockist if you would like to go and see it in the flesh.

Our Tap – Hesta Pull Out

Again abode has a wide choice of designs and finishes. Ranging from antique brass to rose gold, to copper, to black nickel and traditional chrome. With lots of other options in between. We knew we would like a brushed nickel finish to match the light switches that we are planning on installing. We also knew that we wanted a tap that has a pull-out spout head.  The website allowed us to narrow down our search by filtering on these two things on the menu.

Again all the measurements are available and you can even look at a technical drawing if you are liaising with a plumber or kitchen designer.  So although you are buying remotely you have all the information you need at your fingertips. There are also full installation instructions and detail of the 5-year warranty.

Normally abode products are only available through third-party stockist and DIY stores. However, for a limited time, you can order your items directly from them. Which is what we did.  I must admit I was very impressed with how quickly they turned up and how well packaged they were. The sink arrived three days after we put the order in!

Updating the kitchen and fitting our new abode Kitchen Sink & Tap

We spoke to our local plumber who came and put the sink in for us. It was so simple, he literally just took the old one out and dropped the new one into place.  Our new sink did not come with a hole for the tap, but it is possible to cut a hole on either side of it. This is something the plumber did for us, as we would not have known where to start. After which he installed the tap itself. The whole thing took about an hour and a half to do. Both the sink and tap came with all the necessary pipework and fittings and we did not need anything in addition.  There really wasn’t any upheaval at all.

Our Initial Thoughts

I am so pleased with the new sink and tap. You can see in the before and after pictures just how much smarter and more modern it looks. It is funny because you do not really realise how bad something is until you replace it. The first time I washed up after having the abode sink and tap installed I put far too much washing up liquid in the bowl. The water pressure through the old tap had been so bad it would not make it frothy at all.  With my new abode tap on the other hand meant that we had bubbles all over the place.

The pull out is really useful when washing larger items and also means I can keep my new sink nice and sparkly.  The black button at the back releases the hose and then it returns itself on its own, all very smoothly. You really wouldn’t know it was there looking at the tap head-on.  The draining board has a slight tilt which means everything drains away nicely. The composite granite means that there are no watermarks, instead the water rolls off it in beads. We are so very happy with it. Of course, now it means I need to look at the rest of the kitchen. But we’ve big plans for that too, so make sure you come back to see how we get on.

The Xcite One and a Half Bowl & Drainer Sink in Grey Metallic Granite sink retail at £435 and the Hesta Pull Out Tap in brushed nickel at £454. You can currently buy both directly from the website along with a wide choice of other kitchen and bathroom accessories. Delivery is free for orders over £50. Find our more – www.abodedesigns.co.uk
