May half term holiday is normally much better on the weather front and so we tend to head out and explore.  Looking for things to do for May half term near me in Sussex.  With (hopefully) the sun shining our focus tends to be very much on outside activities for the May half term in Sussex. This is just as well since we are lucky that there are so many different activities over May half term in West Sussex and East Sussex. I have pulled together a list of the best May half-term activities in Sussex for 2023.

May Half-Term in West Sussex

I have tried to include a wide variety of different activities which you can get up to over the May half term in West Sussex.

Fishers Farm Park – May Half Term Fun!

• What – Suitable for the whole family, there is so much to do. Including a tractor-trailer ride which is always such a great hit with the boys and younger visitors. Get to see cows, sheep, goats, ponies and more on this family adventure. If the weather is warm enough (fingers crossed), cool off in Fisher’s water-tastic Splash Attack, with shooting water jets and splish splash water fun. There are even deck chairs for the parents. Special mention for the Sky Fall for the older children which includes jumping off a platform onto a giant stunt pillow. Such a brilliant range of fun things to do.  Read more.

Arundel Castle – Medieval Festival

• What – Set during the 15th century, the Royal Family of Plantagenets have split the country into a civil war, known to history as The Wars of the Roses. King Edward IV, Duke of York, is beset with rebellion from the former Kings’ supporters, Henry VI, Duke of Lancaster. Although no historical raid took place at Arundel this three-day event portrays a Lancastrian raiding party engaging with Yorkist forces beneath the mighty castle at Arundel. With three tented encampments portraying 15th-century crafts, cooking weapons and armour, have-a-go activities such as archery, and two skirmishes each day there is plenty to transport visitors back into this turbulent time in England’s history. • How Much – For this event you need to ensure you either buy castle and gardens or bedroom and garden tickets. Garden tickets alone are not available. It is recommended to book tickets online in advance. Prices are from £25 for an adult, £11 for a child or £61 for a family.

Borde Hill Gardens

• What – Explore the Garden on an eco-themed trail connecting children to nature while encouraging sustainable living. Discover fun facts, solve some puzzles and collect fallen finds in your ‘nature box’ as you explore. There is also an abundance of vibrant azaleas, giant rhododendrons and carpets of bluebells. There are also some drop-in sessions being run through the week including pea shoot heads, sunflower planting and nature art in the form of butterflies and caterpillars. Read more.

• How Much – Garden admission must also be brought. Booking online in advance is recommended and attracts a 5% discount, adults cost £9.98, children £6.65, with family tickets from £23.75. National Trust Nymans – Mogs Marvellous Half Term

• What – Visit Nymans for Mog’s Marvellous May Half Term as we celebrate Judith Kerr’s much-loved Mog the Forgetful Cat stories. Especially for the school holidays, there will be chances to meet Mog during the week and pick up a free trail sheet to see what you can spot from Mog’s world as you explore the garden. There’s more Mog-themed fun and games in the Play Glade too. Plus there are various woodland trails and you can pick up activity packs and binoculars from the office at the entrance. Read more.
• When – Open throughout May half term in West Sussex, 10 am to 4 pm although the car park opens at 9 am. The trial will extend past half term until the 21st of July.

• How Much – Entrance is free for National Trust members, prices without gift aid are £15 for an adult, £7.50 for a child and £37.50 for a family or £22.50 with one adult.  There is no additional charge for the trial.

Arundel Wetland Centre – Drawn to Water 

• What – Starting this May half term. Collect an illustrated guide full of Quentin Blake’s drawings and journey around the wonderful wetland world this summer. New seasonal trails will be launched later in the year, each with a different illustrated guide to collect and keep. They are also running various art illustration activities throughout. During the May half term, they are running ink and quill drawing drop-in session. As well as learn to sketch a bird workshop on selected days which costs an extra £2. Not to mention the other family-friendly things including a wetland safari, try pond dipping and attend the meet a pelican keeper drop-in talk at Pelican Cove. Read more.

The Noviam Museum in Chichester – Roman Week

• What – Over half term week the museum is running several different Roman-themed events on selected dates. These include a reenactment, crafts, object handling and walks. Some of the activities need to be booked in advance and come with an additional fee. You can find out full information and more detail here –  Read more. There is also a special exhibition of The Magic of Middle-earth  – a magical treasure trove of objects and artworks celebrating the epic fantasy novels ‘The Hobbit and ‘The Lord of the Rings’.
• When – Open throughout May half term in West Sussex although closed on Sundays and Mondays. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4.30 pm and on Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm.

• How Much – Admission is free although certain exhibitions will be charged. 

Fishbourne Roman Palace – Celts Vs Romans

• What –  As part of the Chichester Roman week, Fishbourne Roman Palace is celebrating all things Celts and Romans.
• These two communities lived side-by-side 2,000 years ago, trading goods, ideas and cultural practices. From fashion to food, they have got lots of fantastic activities for families visiting Fishbourne Roman Palace this May half term. The majority of activities are included in general admission fees. Activities include arts and crafts, music making, fashion and tattoos, games, hair styling and spinning. There is also a special trail that runs every day. Read More. 
• When – Runs from Monday 29th of May to Friday 2nd of June 10 am to 5 pm. Last admission 30 minutes before closing.

Wey & Arun Canal – Cream Tea Cruises

• What – This is a lovely old traditional day out, we have taken several boat trips along the Wey and Arun Canal which was restored in 2016.  It is one of our favourite May half term activities in Sussex. This popular boat trip will be 1.5 hours and include a cream tea served while you cruise along the lovely Sussex countryside. Read More.

Adur Centre’s half-term venture day

• What – The Adur Centre’s adventure club runs for 8-15 year-olds. These clubs are a great opportunity for young people to do adventurous outdoor activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, indoor climbing, low ropes courses, archery and more. Read more. 
• When – Runs from the 30th of May to the 1st of June.  Drop off at 8.30 am and pick up at 5 pm.

• How Much – Full day is £50,  bookable via their website. 

Mystery Trails 

• What – Whistlestop Arts have created seven FREE outdoor mystery trail games across the Horsham District. These immersive and exciting trails have broad appeal; play as a family, with friends, or use them as a team-building exercise. Read more. 
• When – It has now been extended and is avaliable online if you can not find the paper packs.
• Where – Across the towns and villages of Horsham, Southwater, Billingshurst, Pulborough, Henfield, Steyning and Storrington. Pick up your pack in the local library or you can download them from their website.

Wakehurst 

• What – Every half term and school holiday, young adventurers will have the opportunity to become a planet-saving Nature Hero. Put on your cape, join the mission and collect unique new badges. Help Pip, Bud and Sprout as they discover new skills to protect wildlife, unlock the powers of plants and discover funky fungi. During the May half term in West Sussex, you can earn your Habitat Hero Badge. They are also running a Bee House drop-in workshop session. Read more.
• When – Runs throughout the May half term in West Sussex from 10 am to close 
• Where – Wakehurst Kew Gardens, Ardingly, Haywards Heath, Sussex, RH17 6TN
• How Much – You do need to book the trial in advance, numbers are limited and it is likely to sell out. The badge costs £3, the cape £13.50 plus entry to Wakehurst. The workshop costs £4.50. Admission – adults cost £14.95, young people aged 17-25 £7.50 with children aged 16 and under free with a paying adult. Entry is free if you are a National Trust member. Although you still need to pay £10 for parking.

Weald & Downland Museum

• What – A living museum that focuses very much on English social history and farming. Spread over 40 acres it has over 50 historic buildings to explore. There are also several different craft displays. Giving children the chance to experience traditional skills and view artefacts from the local area. Throughout the May half term, they are running a busy bee trail where you can follow the trail around the Museum and discover some surprising facts about bees in the fresh air. There will also be Knucker the Dragon’s Nature School from Tuesday 30 May to Thursday 1 June. There will also be other bee-inspired activities such as rolling beeswax candles (£1) and toy train sets. • When – Open daily between 10.30 am and 6 pm over May half term in West Sussex – Saturday 27th of May to Sunday 4th June.
• Where – Weald & Downland Living Museum, Town Lane, Singleton, West Sussex PO18 0EU
• How Much – Tickets can be pre-booked on the website, family tickets of two adults and up to three children cost £46.50 with gift aid or £42.00 without. Reduced family tickets are available for grandparents and grandchildren and one adult family. Adult tickets cost £17.50/£15.50 and children £8.50/£7.50. Children aged four and under are free. 

Amberley Museum

• What – Travel back in time and explore the South’s working past in a former quarry and lime works, located in the heart of the South Downs National Park. With over 40 exhibit areas to discover, including a narrow-gauge railway, historic buses, rural crafts and extensive communications displays, there is something for everyone.  Over the May half term in celebration of the UN’s upcoming World Environment Day, they are running a  ‘Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle’ trail with the opportunity to leave your ‘Pledge for the Planet’ to inspire other visitors.  On the 3rd of June, they will also be running a special environment day. • How Much – Tickets can be booked online in advance and it is recommended for weekends, holidays and when they are running special events. This is to ensure there is a car park space. If you are travelling by train you do not need to pre-book. A family of two adults and up to three children costs £43.00 or £39.00 with gift aid. Adults £16/14.50 and children aged 5-16 £7.70/£7. Under 5s are free.  

National Trust Petworth House & Park – Elmer Art Parade

• What – Over the May half term Petworth House is running a series of Elmer-themed events including an Elmer Day,  Art parade and drop-in craft sessions which are running on the Tuesday and Thursday of half term. Collect your free map at reception and follow the winding paths around the garden to search for ten Elmer sculptures, inspired by the work of well-known artists from across the world including Yayoi Kusama, William Morris, JMW Turner and the original Patchwork Elmer by David McKee. Ardingly Resovier – Sailing for Juniors

• What – This course is ideal for the young beginner. We recommend this course for children between 6 and 10. Optimist Taster runs for five mornings OR five afternoons, with a focus on fostering enjoyment and familiarity with the boat. Instructors will cover the basic elements of sailing, all the while ensuring the students are comfortable and enjoying their first time on the water. Each student sails his or her boat (weather condition dependent) and no previous experience is needed. This course runs for five mornings or five afternoons. Read More

RSPB Pulborough Brooks 

• What – Pulborough Brooks is running several events across the May half term. Including reptile days where you can go on an hour-and-a-half walk with a guide. Your guide will take you to parts of the reserve our visitors don’t normally have access to whilst you search for adders, grass snakes and slow worms, learn how to identify them and find out more about their behaviour.
• Wild Wednesday Family Event Day – running between 10 am and 1 pm with activities depending on the weather, you could be pond dipping, bug hunting or going on reptile hunting. 
• Nighttime safari – Once the sun sets you will go on a night-time walk onto the heathland. Take a closer look at some marvellous moths and then head out on a search for mysterious nightjars, brilliant bats and other night creatures.
• When – Reptile days are running on the 28th and 30th of May.  Family Day on 31st of May. Night time safari 2nd of June

Other things to do during the May half term in West Sussex

As well as all the fantastic activities listed above there are some other days out in West Sussex that are open over half term. Although not putting on any specific half-term events. I have included these below.

Leonardslee Gardens 

• What – Lots to see and do in the gardens. Including the wallabies. You can see the wallabies & baby joeys at the wallaby enclosure being fed from 12:00 – 12:15 daily. There is a very grand doll house exhibition. The extensive collection depicts the Edwardian estate and neighbouring villages at 1:12 scale, with landscapes and characters acting out day-to-day activities. Read more. 
• When – Leonardslee Gardens is open throughout the May half term in West Sussex open 9 am to 4 pm with the last admission at 2.30 pm.

Washbrook Farm 

• What – Details of their activities over half term have not been released for 2023. More details to follow. Washbrooks Family Farm has everything you need, indoor play areas, outdoor play areas, pedal tractors to ride on and plenty of opportunities to get up close to farm animals. Read more.

Battle Abbey Kids Rule

• What – Visit Battle Abbey to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation with hands-on activities and fresh-air family fun this May half term in East Sussex. Come and learn the fundamentals of swordsmanship at our sword school and learn about Norman’s best weapon, horses, through cavalry training. Throughout the day you can listen to our medieval storytellers’ epic accounts covering the Anglo-Saxon kings, the famous Battle of Hastings and the transition to Norman rule. National Trust Sheffield Park & Garden

• What – Help the bees on a pollination mission around Sheffield Park and Garden this May half term. Take in the vibrant spring colours as you follow the bees around the garden, with plenty of games to play as you go, from a bean bag toss to a round of ‘Buzz that Tune’ or can you spot a Bee in a Tree? At the end of the trail, pick up your free wildflower seeds as a thank you from the queen bee. The trail is free but normal garden admission applies. Read more.

Bluebell Railway 

• What – Service trains are operating during this May half term in East Sussex although they are not running any special events over the May half term. The usual kids travel for a quid offer is running. Although several weekend events are running throughout the Summer.  Enjoy the interactive exhibits in SteamWorks and the locomotive shed. National Trust Standen House – Picnic Pickle Trail 

• What – Standen House are running a Picnic Pickle Trail-themed trail. The Beales have a lovely teatime picnic planned with their friends in the garden but some mischief makers have hidden all the cakes. Follow the trail clues to see if you can find the cheeky rascals and enjoy some fun activities on the way. Look out for the felted mice in the house too with their stores of stolen food. You’ll find picnic blankets and deck chairs in the garden so you can relax and maybe have your own picnic. Our Barn Cafe has some lovely cakes! The trial costs £3 with a small gift. Read more.

• What – Bodiam Castle is running a Knights Quest – The hunt for the golden goblets. There are six golden goblets to be spotted as you explore the castle grounds on this family-friendly trail. Make your way around the castle courtyard at your own pace to find all six goblets and win a prize from the King or Queen. Read more.

The Observatory Science Centre- Spectacular Science

• What – They are open every day during May half term offering the chance to enjoy all the Science activities on offer at the Observatory Science Centre. There is also a special Science Festival running over the bank holiday weekend.  Activities include a spectacular science of the sound show, science adventures in an inflatable dome, Physics with the University of Sussex and 
• viewing the Sun safely through specialist solar telescopes. As well as all the other usual STEM activities. Read More.

Hove Lagoon – Watersports

• What – Hove Lagoon run two different Learn to Sail courses aimed at different age groups, either 6-8-year-olds or 8-12-year-olds.  Kids love the water and learning to sail at a young age is great fun.  This course is made up of shorter sessions with a focus on fun and confidence building. This is a course designed to build basic sailing and water confidence for youngsters. On completion, kids should be ready to take the RYA Junior Courses. Read More.

• What – There is so much going on at Drusillas Park and they are adding to it this half-term by opening a brand new retro-style arcade. Located in their newly renovated House of Fun, gamer fans are invited to enjoy free unlimited turns on their awesome arcade machines. Along with indoor play areas, outdoor play areas, the friendly zoo, an adventure maze, a whole host of rides and Spark the new interactive sensory space. Blackberry Farm Park 

• What – Blackberry Farm Park offers a variety of activities and animal talks to keep little ones interested throughout the day. Including indoor and outdoor play areas, tractor rides, animal handling, pony rides, and a whole host of farm animals. There is something for the entire family. Read More

Knockhatch Adventure Park

• What – There is so much to do! Although some of the activities do have additional costs associated with them. Cannon Arena, Chestnut Wood Adventure Playground, Children’s Farm, Dino Safari Simulator Ride, Enchanted Forest Mini Golf, Froggies Indoor Soft Play, Jumping Pillows, Lost World Playbarn, Owl Sanctuary, Owl Displays, Panning For Fossils, Pirate’s Cove Paddling Pool, Quadapillar Barrel Rides, The Sherlock Holmes Experience, Tommy Tractor Playbarn, Tractor Tom Ride and Wallaby Walkthrough. Sharnfold Farm

• What – All the usual fun on the farm. There is a play area and farm trail where you can meet all the animals. Including pigs, cows, chickens, sheep and alpacas, Not to mention the farm shop and cafe serving homemade cakes and snacks. Read more. 
• When – Open throughout the half term – 9.30 am to 4 pm
• Where – Hailsham Road, Stone Cross, Eastbourne, BN24 5BU
• How Much – Access to the farm costs £4.95 for anyone over the age of 3, and they have a super saver family ticket – just £16 for a family of 4. 

 

As this list shows, there are plenty of ways that you can keep your children entertained during half term, whether you are looking for a full day out or a simple activity close to home. While it is fun to try new experiences, don’t overlook the classic family favourites. A trip to the local park, learning to ride a bike, heading out for a family cycle, or packing a picnic and exploring the coast can create some of the most memorable moments. Sometimes, the best half-term activities are the simplest ones, giving families the chance to spend quality time together, get active, and enjoy the outdoors
