Rainbow bedroom ideas for a little boy. Harry who is four made it perfectly clear just before Christmas that he wanted one thing. A green and rainbow coloured bedroom. His two favourite colours. So we set about trying to create a room that he wanted. Our house is not particularly big, we were planning on moving but unfortunately, the pandemic stopped that idea. Harry’s room is the smallest in the hours so we needed to utilise the space as much as possible.

Thanks to the pandemic there are still some items missing so I will updating this post as the finishing touches turn up.

Rainbow Wallpaper

Other than the green paint which we got mixed at our local DIY store. The most important thing for Harry was a rainbow wall. We considered all sorts of different things. Such as painting our own rainbow, using wall stickers and what we finally settled on – a wallpaper mural. This is when we discovered MuralsWallpaper that offered sixteen different rainbow patterns to choose from. Harry opted for Gusto which is a textured crayon rainbow stripes wallpaper mural.

It was very simple to order, as all murals are made to size. This means that what you see on the screen is what you get delivered. Online there is a tool which allows you to put the wall measurements in and it will give you a price. The wall in Harry’s room was 9ft by 9ft and our mural cost £278 with VAT and delivery. It is also possible to request a proof so that you can double-check exactly what you are ordering. I am not sure who was more excited by the prospect him or me!

Installation of MuralsWallpaper

The mural arrived in a black tube well protected for delivery. On the roll of paper, there are clear instructions on how to hang your mural. I was a little worried as papering is one of the husbands least favourite jobs. However with simple pictorial instructions and very good quality paper. It actually went up simply and easily. Much to his surprise. And mine, as there was no cursing which, is what usually happens. 

On the roll there are the drops which make up the mural. Each separated by a very obvious cutting line. The instructions are very easy to follow and because you paste the wall and not the paper you don’t even need a pasting table. Because of the quality, it was easy to hang with no creasing. We would no hesitate to use them again and I am busy working out which other rooms in the house need an update. Harry, well he loves it and for the first couple of nights, he stroked it and spoke to it before bed! So I think that’s a win all round.

Flooring

We did not change the carpet as it was only put in about eight years ago. And since then the room has only ever been used a nursery it has not had a lot of wear. But I did want to update the floor with a new rug. I would normally opt for a wool version. But since having the boys and seeing what they have done to the very expensive wool rugs in the playroom. I have instead opted for a much cheaper and hard-wearing version. We managed to pick this one up from Amazon* for £37 for 80cm x 150cm. He also has his old rainbow shaped rug which we have had since he was tiny. 

Lighting

At the moment he is still very attached to his night light Lumie Bedbug so we have no plans to change that. Although I have seen some lovely neon rainbow lights which may work at a later date. However, we did change the lampshade to a Rainbow Hot Air Balloon Ceiling Light from Amazon* which cost £9.49. 

Storage

Because it is the smallest room in the house, we have had to be clever about storage. Under the bed, we have put drawer units. Then the rest of the storage will be toy cupboards. We are still waiting on one but have invested in some corner units to make the most of the space.  Outside of that, I have these rainbow storage bins for soft toys and washing. 

One thing we have learned is that fitted storage earns its place in a small room far better than freestanding pieces. Built-in units use awkward corners and full ceiling height, which frees up floor space for playing. When the budget allows, quality wardrobes made to measure can hold clothes, bedding and toys behind a single tidy front, and they tend to last through several stages of a child’s room. It is the kind of investment that keeps a little space feeling calm.

Window Dressing & Bedding

Accepting that nothing was going to match in the bedroom meant that instead of looking for rainbow curtains. We decided to go for something bright. Such as these Dunelm Star Curtains which have a blackout lining and are currently half price at 22.50! We also added a green blackout blind.  Harry loves to make these sticker mosaics and he has several that hang in his window. If you would like to buy similar then you can find them on Amazon*.

But my favourite item is this beautiful rainbow flower pot from Red Candy that costs £22.00. It is lovely and bright and the perfect size for a windowsill. Harry decided that he simply had to have a cactus in it. The rainbow books are actually Ant & Bee books* which are great for early readers as they put keywords in red. Harry really enjoys reading them.

The bedding is a bit of a bone of contention with Harry. As he loved his old set so much that he didn’t want to give it up. However, it was toddler bed size so he didn’t really have a lot of options. I have promised that I will work out a way of including it in the decor. Although keeping with the rainbow theme we did find this bright and colourful animal set from Next. It came as a paid and the other one has a similar design but with vehicles. Perfect for Harry as he loves cars and trucks! 

Handmade Finishing Touches 

There are quite a few handmade touches that we will be adding. Some of which are yet to arrive and some I have yet to make! So make sure you pop back to see how we are getting on.  They include rainbow bunting out of old rainbow muslins and a felt star garland to hang along the side of his bed. I am also planning on using his old bedding to make a bean bag and a giant letter H pillow.  But for now, we have this lovely handmade rainbow which came from Etsy.
