Looking for a fun day out with the kids? Look no further than Weston-super-Mare. This seaside town in England has plenty of activities and attractions to keep the whole family entertained. We visited on a wet day in May on day trips to Weston Super Mare. Having found ourselves glamping close to Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills, we were on the hunt for fun things to do inside. Needless to say, when we came across the Grand Pier, with over 50 rides and attractions, including a 4D cinema and a laser maze, we were sold. And although that is what brought us initially to this town in North Somerset we discovered a lot more things to do if you are planning a family day out. 

Top Attractions for Kids in Weston-Super-Mare

When it comes to keeping kids entertained in Weston Super Mare, there is no shortage of options. Weston Super Mare has plenty of attractions that are perfect for families with kids. If you’re looking for a day at the beach, a trip to a theme park, or a visit to a museum, there is something for everyone in this seaside town. And you will be pleased to know a number of free things to do ideal for day trips to Weston Super Mare.

Weston-Super-Mare Beaches

Weston Super Mare is famous for its beaches apparently there are eleven in and around the town. Making Weston-Super-Mare a great place to take kids, a traditional seaside town that dates back to the Victorian Era. Undoubtedly some of the best beaches to visit during day trips to Weston Super Mare include:

Weston-Super-Mare Grand Pier Beach

The main sandy beach is really hard to miss if you park in the centre of the town like we did. Is a long stretch of sand and is backed by a promenade, which is lined with shops, cafes, and attractions. The beach is popular with families and has a range of activities available, including donkey rides, mini-golf, and a water park. When we visited it was low tide and the sand stretched for miles with panoramic views into the Bristol Channel. Although you do need to be mindful that it turns to muddy consistency as you go out further due to the tidal range and can be dangerous.

This is the Weston-Super-Mare beach which is home to the Grand Pier, which has a range of attractions, including rides, arcade games, and food outlets. Making it an all-weather attraction. From the pier, you get great views across the severn estuary. There are also plenty of places to get ice cream and other treats along the beachfront. I can recommend the rainbow ice cream. 

Marine Lake Beach

This could be an alternative if you are looking for something a little less well-known. Marine Lake Beach is a machine-made lake covering an area of 57 acres and is surrounded by a promenade and grassy areas, making it a popular spot for picnics, walks, and water sports. The lake is ideal for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, and sailing, and there are several local businesses that offer equipment rental and lessons. So could be a good option for slightly older children. The lake is also home to a variety of wildlife, including swans, ducks, and geese so remember the bird food. To reach it 

Sanatorium Beach 

Sanatorium Beach is a small, secluded beach located just south of Weston-super-Mare. The beach is named after the nearby former sanatorium, which was used to treat tuberculosis patients in the early 20th century. The beach is accessible via a steep path that leads down from the clifftop. The path is quite challenging, so it’s not recommended for people with mobility issues or young children. A quiet and peaceful spot, and is a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy some relaxation.

The beach is surrounded by cliffs and is sheltered from the wind, making it a great place to sunbathe and swim. There are no facilities available on the beach, so visitors should bring their own food, drinks, and other supplies. The beach is also not patrolled by lifeguards, so visitors should take care when swimming in the sea.

Sand Bay Beach

Sand Bay Beach is a beautiful, secluded beach located just north of Weston-super-Mare. The beach is backed by sand dunes and is surrounded by cliffs, giving it a secluded and peaceful atmosphere. The beach is wide and sandy and is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and playing beach games. There are several facilities available on the beach, including toilets, showers, and a cafe that serves food and drinks. There is also a car park nearby, making it easy to access the beach by car. Brean Beach

Brean Beach is a long, sandy beach located just south of Weston-super-Mare. The beach is backed by sand dunes and is surrounded by countryside, wide and sandy, it is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and playing beach games. There are several facilities available on the beach, including toilets, showers, and a range of food and drink options. As well a a car park nearby, making it easy to access the beach by car. There are several water sports available, including jet skiing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. The beach is also home to several attractions, including Brean Leisure Park, which offers a range of rides and attractions for all ages. There is also a golf course and a nature reserve nearby, offering a range of activities for visitors to enjoy.

Ride a Donkey

Donkey rides have been a popular activity on the beach in Weston-super-Mare for many years. During the summer months, you can find donkey rides available on the main beach near the Grand Pier. The donkey rides are operated by licensed operators who take the safety and welfare of the animals very seriously. The donkeys are well-cared for and are only used for short periods of time each day. National Trust Sites near Weston Super Mare

We are big fans of the National Trust having a family membership. For this reason, I always like to see what National Trust sites are located close by when we went on a day trips to Weston Super Mare. Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Somerset coast there are several National Trust sites near Weston-super-Mare that are worth visiting. Here are some of the best National Trust sites in the area:

1. Tyntesfield – This Victorian Gothic mansion is located just outside of Bristol and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland. The house is filled with original Victorian furnishings and artwork, and there are regular events and activities throughout the year.
2. Brean Down – This dramatic headland is located just south of Weston-super-Mare and offers stunning views of the Bristol Channel and the surrounding countryside. There are several walking trails to explore, as well as a fort and a cafe.
3. Clevedon Court – This medieval manor house is located in the town of Clevedon, just north of Weston-super-Mare. The house is filled with antique furniture and artwork, and there are regular events and activities throughout the year.
4. King John’s Hunting Lodge – This historic building is located in the town of Axbridge, just south of Weston-super-Mare. The building dates back to the 16th century and now houses a local museum that tells the story of the town and its people.
5. Sand Point – A natural pier into the Bristol Channel, north of Weston-super-Mare and Brean Down. Perfect for picnics withviews across Sand Bay.

Steep Holm Island 

• Steep Holm Island is a small island located in the Bristol Channel, just off the coast of Weston-super-Mare. The island is owned by the Kenenth Allsop Memorial Trust and is a popular destination for visitors who want to explore its natural beauty and rich history. The island is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds, butterflies, and plants. There are several walking trails on the island that offer stunning views of the surrounding sea and coastline.
• In addition to its natural beauty, Steep Holm Island has a rich history that dates back to the Iron Age. The island has been used as a place of worship, a monastery, and a military fortification over the centuries, and there are many historic buildings and ruins to explore.
• Visitors to Steep Holm Island can take organised boat trips by Bay Island Voyages from Weston-super-Mare or Cardiff. This is the only way to visit the island and costs £45 per person. Bleadon Levels Nature Reserve

• Bleadon Levels Nature Reserve is a beautiful nature reserve located just outside of Weston-super-Mare. The reserve covers over 200 acres of land and is home to a wide variety of wildlife and plant species. The reserve is made up of a series of wetland habitats, including reed beds, ponds, and grassland areas. These habitats provide a home for a range of bird species, including reed warblers, sedge warblers, and bitterns. The reserve is also home to a variety of dragonflies and damselflies.

Parks and Playgrounds in Weston Super Mare

Parks and playgrounds are always good options when it comes to something to do for kids on day trips to Weston Super Mare. Mine still love a park! Plus they make a great free activity when you are on holiday in Weston Super Mare and looking to try and keep the price of activities down. There are several parks and playgrounds in Weston Super Mare that are perfect for kids. Two that are worth a visit are.

Grove Park

Grove Park is surprisingly large since it is situated in the town centre making it a popular spot. The park features a large lake, a children’s play area, tennis courts, and a bowling green. With plenty of space to run around and play ball games and have a picnic, it is the perfect place to send the morning. There is also a skate park for older children. A great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Address – 78 Upper Church Rd, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2AE

Ashcombe Park

If you are looking for something a bit more substantial then Ashcombe Park could be an alternative. It is situated on the southern slopes of the town and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The park features a large pond, a children’s play area, a skate park, and a basketball court. There are also several walking trails that wind through the park’s wooded areas. Ashcombe Park is a popular spot for picnics, dog walking, and outdoor sports. Address – 4 Cranbourne Chase, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2UQ

Clarence Park 

Clarence Park is also situated in the southern part of the town, close to the seafront and so easy to walk to. The park features a large bowling green, a children’s play area, tennis courts, and a putting green. There are also several walking trails that wind through the park’s landscaped gardens and wooded areas. A great place to relax and enjoy the views of the Bristol Channel. Theme Parks and Water Parks

For a day of thrills and excitement, head to one of Weston Super Mare’s theme parks or water parks. There are several located a short drive away. Centrally there is the Grand Pier which could be classed as an indoor theme park. Others you may want to consider on day trips to Weston Super Mare:

Brean Theme Park

• You will need a car to reach this theme park if you are staying centrally. It features over 40 rides and attractions suitable for all ages, including roller coasters, water rides, and thrill rides. Some of the most popular attractions at the park include the Sky Drop, a 40-meter high drop tower ride, and the Astro Storm, a spinning coaster that takes riders through a series of twists and turns. The park also has a large indoor play area for younger children, as well as a selection of food outlets and gift shops. Brean Theme Park is a popular destination for families and thrill-seekers alike. 
• Entrance is free but you can buy wristbands in advance which offers 10% off standard prices. Rides are operated on height so check before you visit, wristband prices reflect this with three different options. Including those for younger visitors. Prices start at £16.20 for a single day or £22.50 for a three-day pass.

Puxton Park 

• Located close by in Hewish. Puxton Park offers a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages, including a farm park, adventure park, and shopping village. The farm park features a variety of farm animals, including cows, pigs, and sheep, as well as interactive exhibits and activities such as tractor rides and animal feeding sessions. The adventure park includes a large indoor play area, outdoor play equipment, a mini golf course and a high ropes course. The shopping village features a range of independent shops, restaurants, and cafes. Puxton Park is a popular destination for families and offers a full day of fun for all ages.
• Entrance prices are very reasonable for a full day out. If you buy your tickets online in advance you will save 10%. Prices start from £42.95 for a family of four in low season and £54.95 in the peak season.

Funland Theme Park

• This a family-friendly amusement park located in the heart of Weston-super-Mare right on the seafront and so more suitable if you do not have transport. It features a variety of rides and attractions suitable for all ages, including a roller coaster, a giant Ferris wheel, and a log flume ride. The park also has a selection of arcade games, prize games, and food outlets. As well as pirate-themed adventure golf.

Water Adventure Play Park

• A popular attraction located on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare next to Melrose Car Park, which is between the Old Colonial and Welbeck Hotels just before you reach Marine Lake and Knightstone Island. It is a large water play area featuring a variety of interactive water features, including fountains, sprays, and jets. The park is designed to provide a safe and fun environment for children to play and cool off on hot summer days. A great way to spend a sunny day by the seaside. There are toilets and changing rooms on-site and there is a small Visitor Information Centre that can assist you with other ideas for things to do and for information on Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area.
• The park is free to use when the splash pad is not in operation. The water is on from April to September with a nominal cost of £3 per child and you are free to return as much as you want during that day. You can read more about what to expect on the council’s website.

Museums in Weston Super Mare

We quite often visit museums when the weather is not behaving. Unfortunately, if you plan to holiday in the UK there are never any guarantees. In fact, that is how we discovered the Helicopter Museum on a rainy day in May. There are two museums which are suitable for children. Unfortunately, there is no Weston Super Mare Aquarium. The closest is in Bristol which is a forty-minute drive away. 

The Weston Museum 

• The Weston Museum is a local history museum housed in a historic building that was originally built in 1868 as the town’s first public library. The museum features a range of exhibits that showcase the history and heritage of Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area. These include displays on local industries such as tourism, agriculture, and fishing, as well as exhibits on the town’s famous pier and its role in World War II. The museum also has a program of temporary exhibitions and events throughout the year. The Weston Museum is a popular destination for visitors interested in learning more about the history and culture of this seaside town and has an interesting collection of fossils. There is a gift shop and cafe on site and do not forget to visit Clara’s cottage which is also part of the museum.

The Helicopter Museum

• The museum is dedicated to the history and development of rotary-wing aircraft and features a collection of over 80 helicopters and autogyros making it the largest helicopter museum in the world.  The museum’s exhibits include military and civilian helicopters, as well as a range of experimental and prototype aircraft. Visitors can also see a variety of engines, rotor blades, and other helicopter components.
• The museum has a program of events and activities throughout the year, including helicopter flights, guided tours, and special exhibitions. The Helicopter Museum is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts and anyone interested in the history and technology of rotary-wing aircraft.

Lambretta Museum

• Inside the museum, you’ll find a variety of Lambretta scooters from different eras, as well as a range of accessories and memorabilia. The displays are well-presented and offer a fascinating insight into the history of Lambretta scooters and their impact on popular culture. The Lambretta Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone who is interested in scooters or the history of transportation. It’s a small museum, but it’s packed with interesting exhibits and information. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they are always happy to answer questions and share their passion for Lambretta scooters.

 

Street Art Walk

• Although technically not a museum, I do love a bit of street art. And since the Tourist Board has created a map specifically showcasing the best examples in the town. You could almost argue it’s an outside museum!

• There are also a number of other places where you can see murals and pieces of street art: 
  1. The Tropicana – The Tropicana is a former lido that has been transformed into a cultural hub. The walls of the building are covered in colourful murals and street art, including works by local and international artists.
  2. The High Street – The High Street in Weston-super-Mare is home to a number of shops and businesses that have commissioned street art for their walls. Look out for the mural of a giant seagull on the side of the Spar shop.
  3. The Seafront – The seafront in Weston-super-Mare is home to a number of murals and street art installations. Look out for the colourful mural of a giant octopus near the Grand Pier.
  4. The Old Town – The Old Town area of Weston-super-Mare is home to a number of independent shops and businesses that have commissioned street art for their walls. Look out for the large mural of a woman’s face on Alexandra Parade.

When it comes to keeping the kids entertained, Weston Super Mare has plenty of options to choose from. Here are some of the best activities and entertainment options for families:

Pirate Adventure Golf

• The attraction is a mini-golf course that is themed around a pirate adventure, with a variety of obstacles and challenges to navigate. The course is suitable for people of all ages and skill levels and is a great way to have fun with friends and family. The course is well-maintained and the theming is excellent, with pirate ships, treasure chests, and other pirate-themed props and decorations.
• In addition to the mini-golf course, Pirate Adventure Golf also has a range of other activities, including a pirate-themed soft play area for younger children. There is also a cafe where you can grab a snack or a drink after your game.

The Grand Pier

• The Grand Pier is one of the most popular attractions in Weston-super-Mare. It is a historic pier that extends out into the Bristol Channel and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The pier has been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike for over 100 years. The Grand Pier is home to a variety of attractions and activities, including a large arcade, a 4D cinema, a virtual reality experience, and a variety of food and drink options.
• There are also a number of rides and attractions, such as a rollercoaster, a ghost train, and a fun house. One of the most popular attractions on the Grand Pier is the indoor go-kart track. The track is open year-round and offers a fun and exciting experience for people of all ages. There is also a soft play area for younger children.

The boys always think of arcade games when we go to the British seaside, although I try to avoid them at all costs. Inevitably we end up relenting at some point. There are several different places in Weston-super-Mare where you can play arcades. The most popular ones are:

The Grand Pier

• The arcade is located on the pier and is one of the biggest and most popular arcades in the town. Inside the arcade, you’ll find a variety of classic and modern arcade games, including racing games, shooting games, claw machines, and more. Penny Falls 

• As the name suggests, the arcade is known for its penny falls machines, which are a type of coin pusher game.
  In a penny falls machine, you insert coins into a slot and try to push other coins and prizes off the edge of a shelf. The aim is to win as many coins and prizes as possible. Penny falls machines are a classic arcade game and are enjoyed by people of all ages.
  In addition to penny falls machines, the arcade also has a variety of other games, including claw machines, racing games, and shooting games. There are also some classic arcade games, such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders.

Olympia Arcades

Indoor Activities at Weston Super Mare

When the weather isn’t cooperating, there are plenty of indoor activities for families to enjoy in Weston Super Mare. As well as the Grand Pier and museums mentioned above there are lots of other options suitable for little kids and not-so-little (adult) kids. 

Soft Play

Weston-super-Mare has a number of soft play centres that are perfect for young children. Quite often a soft play centre is one of the best things you can do when the weather is not playing ball. Since it allows young children to burn off some energy and have fun in a safe and supervised environment. Giving the parents a chance to relax at the same time. Weston Super Mare has a number of different soft play centres. 

Jump N Jackz Children’s Play Centre

• The soft play areas include ball pits, tunnels, and obstacles that are designed to challenge and entertain kids. There is also a separate area for toddlers with soft play equipment that is sized for younger children. In addition to the soft play areas, Jump N Jackz also has a range of other activities, including a bouncy castle and a mini football pitch. There is also a cafe where parents can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or a snack while the kids play.

Kidsville

• Kidsville is a dedicated soft play facility for families and groups in Weston-super-Mare. There is also a toddler area and bouncy castle. Offering hot and cold food and drinks for visitors and birthday parties in the onsite cafe.

Imagination Fascination Children’s Role Play 

• The centre offers a range of imaginative play areas that are designed to encourage children to explore and learn through play. The play areas include a supermarket, a hospital, a fire station, a post office, and a construction site. Each area is fully equipped with props and costumes that allow children to pretend to be doctors, firefighters, shopkeepers, and more. In addition to the role play areas, Imagination Fascination also has a soft play area for younger children, as well as a cafe.

Hutton Moor Leisure Centre

• The facilities at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre include a gym, a swimming pool, a sports hall, squash courts, and a climbing wall. There is also a soft play area for younger children, which is open every day and is suitable for children up to the age of 8. The gym is well-equipped with a range of cardio and weight training equipment, as well as a dedicated free weights area. There are also a variety of fitness classes available, including yoga, spinning, and Zumba.
• The swimming pool is a popular attraction at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, with a variety of swim sessions available for both adults and children. There is also a flume slide and a wave machine for added fun. The sports hall can be used for a variety of activities, including badminton, basketball, and indoor football. The climbing wall is suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers, and there are regular climbing sessions and courses available.  It makes a great day trip twhen in Weston Super Mare.
