Review BabyBjorn One Carrier. I don’t know about you but I find the school run hard work. Especially as Kipper is only nine months old. To think I use to moan about the leisurely walk, pushing the buggy and listening to Monkey rabbit about his day, or watch him run off with his little friends planning all sorts of mischief….sigh.

Now I am back at work our school run exists of manically running up the school drive to get to morning club when it opens (early). This means that I no longer have the luxury of spending time getting the buggy out of the boot. It’s a bit grab and go! Also being back at work and trying not to look like I have been pulled through a hedge backwards I don’t really want to be covered in baby snot.. especially as my work wardrobe is pretty much black, black and more black.

The Best Baby Carrier 

One solution is to use a carrier. We have a BabyBjorn Original Carrier which we have now been using for four and half years, with Monkey taking his first trip out in it at just six days old. Yet Kipper is not a small baby and weighs close to 23lbs meaning he was fast outgrowing it. I was gutted as it washes well and still looks practically brand new despite being thrown into the boot on numerous occasions and being sicked all over.

Like many parents, we have a strong affinity with the brand as our experience has been so good. So when we were offered the chance to review the new BabyBjorn One Carrier which goes up to the age of three and 33lbs I of course said yes please! ….So was I disappointed? of course not!

The carrier lives up to all my expectations and more. Unlike other carriers on the market, this really will take your precious newborn all the way up to the age of three. This is a good investment for this reason alone, no longer do you need to buy multiple structured carriers as they get older!

The carrier has four positions

We are already out of two of them really as Kipper much prefers to be facing outwards now…sob. However, the carrier does allow you to:

Inward facing for newborns without the need for an attachment.

The height can be adjusted so that baby can be carried high up and on your chest. I remember how Kipper use to be comforted by hearing my heartbeat. It was lovely to have him so close in those precious early days, watching him snooze and feeling his little breathing patterns. I already really miss it…. min weight 8lbs/3.5kg

Inward facing for larger babies

Around four months you can lower the height down meaning it is more comfortable for you. It is also possible to change the seat position if you would like, by unzipping the cleverly designed inside pouch.

Baby can face outwards

This is where we are at now, at five months baby can face outwards. Kipper loves watching everything that is going on around him. Also, the head support folds down low enough that it’s now not being treated like a teether! It gives him great views of wants going on. Although you need to remember to move the leg position from wide to normal. This is Kipper’s favourite position. Max weight 12kg

Baby on your back

Once he’s twelve months I will probably switch to carrying him completely on my back. It is so much more comfortable for me. He will be able to travel in this position up until he’s 100cm long or 33lbs/15kgs. Monkey being a little on the skinny side would probably have easily fitted in this up to around three and a half when he had a growth spurt height-wise. As he was out of the buggy early at around two, having a carrier like this would have been a real lifesaver. I lose track of the number of times Hubby use to carry Monkey on his shoulders.

There are many other features I love

The first which deserves a mention is that I can now carry Kipper on my back! Technically Kipper needs to be twelve months so we have only given this a quick go for the purpose of this review. But look how comfortable he looks! The One Carrier is the first carrier from BabyBjorn that gives you this option. It also means Hubby is more inclined to carry him too. I like that it comes with clear instructions on how to get the sling onto your back by moving it (with child) from your front, round your side and onto your back.

Due to Kipper’s age, I am yet to try this alone. At the moment it is very much a two-person job, hopefully, in time, this will change. I really like that BabyBjorn has added a long ribbon to the inside which shows you diagrammatically how to move the carrier to the back position. Thank you BabyBjorn for making my life easier!

It is ergonomic

Secondly like all other BabyBjorn products, there has been extensive research undertaken during its development not only with families but also with medical experts from around the world. For a start it’s ergonomic, with its noticeably extra thick padded shoulder straps and wide waist belt. This means that unlike the old one, I get into this one by placing it over my head.  And the waist belt means that I now support Kipper’s weight on my hips and not on my shoulders or back. I really notice the difference as I would tire after about an hour carrying Kipper in the old carrier.

Wide seat area…

It also has a wide seat area and more importantly has been acknowledged as a hip-healthy baby carrier by International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Something my chiropractor mentioned to when I said I was using a carrier with Kipper in the early days.  What does this actually mean? The hips of a newborn baby get the correct support and are held in an optimal position with the legs angled outwards. This encourages the good hip joint development that is so important during the first months of a baby’s life. The carrier has a zip on the bottom which means that it can be done up for wide-leg carrying if you have a newborn or when carrying in the back position. Or undone for when you are carrying an older baby forward-facing.

Easy to use connectors

Not only do the padded straps do their job but the connectors are much improved compared to our old model. All you need to do is slide the plastic buckle over the top of the other connector and they will snap together. To undo them you need to push in a little side button. They definitely feel a lot stronger and give me confidence that when I come to move Kipper from one position to another that he will be secure and safe.

I honestly couldn’t be happier with our new carrier. It has freed me up immensely and made the school run a lot easier. I am also looking forward to all the adventures we will be able to have as Kipper gets older. Having an active 4.5-year-old means that we needed a carrier that would allow us to carry Kipper through his first walker stage. And also have an option for when he’s more confident yet still gets tired. I mean activities like geocaching are not exactly designed for a buggy! We had got used to not having to give this consideration. The thought of having to limit our activities again was saddening for Monkey as well as us. Now we don’t need to.

But then why am I surprised? BabyBjorn have been making carriers now for almost 40 years.. so they know what they are doing! Baby carriers are quite a personal choice but I would definitely recommend giving this one a test drive.
