The Best Places to see Snowdrops in Surrey 2024

There is something special about seeing the first sign of Spring and for me seeing the first snowdrops is one of them. I do love finding a good snowdrop walk always on the hunt for the elusive double snowdrop. And the good news is that there are plenty of places to see snowdrops in Surrey. Many of the places mentioned below are gardens which means you do not have to go hunting around in the woods to find these beautiful flowers. I really need to plant snowdrops in my own garden for early Spring so I can enjoy them at home at this time of year as well.

The Best Places to see Snowdrops and Snowdrop Walks in Surrey

Winkworth Arboretum

Where – Hascombe Road, Godalming, GU8 4AD
Cost – Adult £11 Child £5.50
More Information – You can’t go wrong when visiting a National Trust location and if you want to enjoy a spectacular display of snowdrops this February then head to the woodland area. It is home to thousands of snowdrops as well as other beautiful winter-flowering plants set among the Surrey Hills. A wonderful location where you can enjoy some time outside and see stunning displays of snowdrops in the damp woodlands. You can also expect some of the other things from a National Trust property including a cafe. In the half term, they normal run a special trail for the children and there are plenty of natural play areas to explore during your visit.

Polesden Lacey

Where – Great Bookham, Near Dorking, RH5 6BD
Cost – Adult £15, Child £7.50 and a family ticket costs £37.50. Free for those with a National Trust membership card.
More Information – This is a stunning mansion set in some of the most beautiful grounds you can walk around and enjoy. It is one of our favourite National Trust properties. If you were wondering where to see snowdrops in Surrey then this is one of the best places to do it. The grounds are home to up to 20 different types of snowdrops, including some unusual varieties. Making it the home to one of the finest snowdrop collections in Surrey. You can take a walk along the Lime Walk on the way to the beautiful yellow house and see the snowdrops in all their glory. Plenty of play opportunities for children including a large natural play area, beautiful gift shop and a large cafe with plenty of seating. There is also a small garden centre which means you can pick up some snowdrop bulbs of your own.

Claremont Landscape Garden

Where – Portsmouth Road, Esher, KT10 9JG
Cost – Adult £13, Child £6.50 and a family ticket costs £32.50.
More Information – You will find that this is one of the smaller gardens suggested in this list of places to see snowdrops in Surrey but it is still a place worth visiting. The historic parkland is designed by Capability Brown. And although it may be slightly quieter than some of the busier spots giving you a chance to experience the beautiful surroundings. Heading to the small woodland area in the garden will give you the best chance of seeing the stunning snowdrops this February. In the Winter months, you may also find part of the lake frozen. On a sunny day, it gives a beautiful reflection of the skies.

Ankerwycke

Where – Windsor Road, Near Old Windsor, SL4 2JL (Sat nav – TW20 0AE)
Cost – Free entry, parking costs only.
More Information – One of the most historic sights to experience for a day out this February where there is a tree thought to be 2,500 years old. It is also rumoured to be the location where Henry VIII courted Anne Boleyn. During the month of February, the snowdrops cluster the historical ruins of Ankerwycke. There are several walking maps and routes that you can download online in advance. Last year you could also take part in an organised snowdrop walk. Although there is no mention of this for 2024. It is one of the best places to see snowdrops in Surrey.

Painshill Park

Where – Portsmouth Road, Cobham, KT11 1JE
Cost – Tickets for Painshill should be booked in advance where possible to benefit from a 20% discount. Tickets online cost £11 for an adult and £6.00 for a child aged 5-16 with gift aid. Under 5s are free. Camp sessions cost £45 per day.
More Information – Painshill Park is a beautiful location with much more than the snowdrop gardens to fill your time. Here in the Winter garden, you will notice the traditional and common snowdrop but also the double snowdrops which have an extra level of petals. There is more to see than the carpets of snowdrops. Find them during walks to the waterwheel, and spot the daffodils making an appearance. If you like to see birds and geese, this is also a great spot full of open spaces. A lovely day out that the whole family can enjoy. There is also normally some sort of half-term trail on for the children, plus play area and grotto to explore.

Gatton Park

Where – Gatton Park, Rocky Lane, Reigate, RH2 0TD
Cost – Adults £6 with children going for free. If you buy entrance on the day the price is £7. You can pre-book entrance via the website.
More Information – If you were looking for snowdrops in Surrey then this is one of the best places to go. It has breathtaking displays in the gardens of Gatton Hall. With some of the most stunning scenes being in the Japanese garden and the rock garden. Every year the gardeners plant more, so you can come here year after year and notice new things. Including new snowdrops. This is a garden that you can usually visit on the first Sunday of each month. However, it opens for Snowdrop Day to give people a chance to witness the snowdrop trail. The dates for 2024 are Sunday 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th of February. Open from midday to 5 pm. Gatton Hall Tea Room will also be open for cake and refreshments, plus a small plant sale.

RHS Wisley

Where – RHS Garden Wisley, Wisley Lane, Woking, Surrey, GU23 6QB
Cost – If you are a member of the RHS then entrance is free. If not normal entrance fees apply, an adult ticket with gift aid costs £20.35 and without gift aid, it is £18.50 Children are £10.20/£9.25. A family ticket for two adults and two children costs £48.85/£44.40 These are online ticket prices which are cheaper than those at the door.
Opening times – 10 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday. Weekends are 9 am to 4.30 pm
More Information – If you like to walk around gardens then this is one of the nicest places to visit in Surrey. Perfect on a dry day. During February snowdrops can be seen all over the gardens. So there are plenty of opportunities to witness the pretty ribbon of pearly white snowdrops. Not only that but there are so some other pretty winter flowers popping through. Ideal for any picture opportunities and some quiet time spent outdoors. With a relatively new play area and also an amazing kitchen garden you could easily spend all day here.

Chalk Lane

Where – Chalk Lane, Epsom, KT18
Cost – No cost
More Information – This is one of those locations that you don’t need to book or make a special trip for. Chalk Lane is home to some beautiful residences and buildings, but there is a woodland garden area where you can experience the beautiful snowdrops. It is a historical setting as the late Lady Sybil Grant use to see snowdrops to raise money for disabled first world war soldiers. One of the best displays in the county during snowdrop season.

Hampton Court Palace

Where – A308, East Molesey, KT8 9AU
Cost – Tickets need to be booked in advance, you can buy tickets online with or without a donation. An adult ticket is £26.30 or £29.00 with a donation, children £13/£14.30 with under 5s being free. A family ticket of two adults and up to three children is £71.70/£78.90.
More Information – A stunning location and one that is filled with lots of history. A day out here promises much more than just beautiful gardens. However, in February, there is an array of these tough little plants. As well as other winter flowers and rare plants in the garden that give this location that extra special edge. Once home to Henry VIII, you can enjoy a spectacular day out here with views across the River Thames. The vast carpets of snowdrops are stunning and well worth a visit just for them. However, I would also head back in the warmer weather for all this beautiful palace has to offer.

The Savill Garden

Opening times – 9 am to 4.30 pm
More Information – This is a tranquil and peaceful garden and outdoor area that promises lots of seasonal displays of flowers and plants. In February, you can witness some of the biggest displays of snowdrops in Surrey. There are 35 acres of gardens and outdoor spaces to explore which are perfect for a Winter walk. These include the Hidden Gardens, Walled Garden, Spring Wood, Summer Gardens, and Autumn Wood, to name a few. The wild snowdrops are usually spotted around Virginia Water Lake from late January onwards. There is also a large adventure play right next door, which needs to be booked in advance.

Yew Tree Cottage

More Information – Another smaller location and one that promises to deliver if you are seeking out snowdrops in Surrey is Yew Tree Cottage. The perfect romantic setting with stunning gardens and lots to see. The owner opens its doors in February on the 26th to allow people to see the breathtaking views of the white flowers that drape the gardens. You will need to check out the NGS Snowdrop Festival website so that you don’t miss out on the opportunity to see them at this great place.

Ham House

Where – Ham Street, Ham, Richmond, Surrey, TW10 7RS
Cost – Adult tickets cost £14, children £7 and you can get family ticket for £35
Opening times – 10 am to 4 pm
More Information – This is a lovely location and also a National Trust property where you can spot not just snowdrops but also some other beautiful flowers in the gardens. They are such a pretty sight and lots to see and do while you are here. The house will be open from the 10th of February onwards. There is also a cafe and second-hand bookshop to explore. For those who like to grow their own, Ham House has one of the most productive walled kitchen gardens in London. It’s tended using organic principles and provides home-grown produce. You will find swathes of snowdrops in the formal gardens which are located under the Acacia trees.

Kew Gardens

Where – Kew, Richmond, London, TW9 3AE
Cost – Free to members. Tickets can be brought in advance online at a reduced price and with or without a donation. The cheapest tickets are for adults at £15, a child at £5, and a family of four at £37.50. Under 4s are free.
More Information – These are botanical gardens and are likely to be a popular and obvious choice if you are hoping to see some snowdrops in Surrey. There are known to be up to 20 different varieties of snowdrops here. You are likely to spot the best collections of snowdrops in the rock gardens and alpine areas in the colder months. You do need to book to go here to avoid disappointment, especially in early February. As they run an orchid show throughout the month of February which is very popular.

Timber Hill

Where – Chertsey Road, Cobham, GU24 8JF
Cost – Adults £6 and Children £1
Opening Times – 11.30 – 4.30 Only open Mondays during February
More Information – This is 16 acres of gardens and is one of the few gardens that are open to the public through the National Open Garden Scheme. There are parks and woodland to enjoy here and you can walk and take in views of the North Downs. As well as the snowdrops, enjoy winter and spring walks. Through different types of witch-hazel and winter-flowering honeysuckle, crocus, daffodils/narcissi. Spring flowers, then gorgeous bluebells and azaleas and fleeting cherry blossom.
It is open on Mondays throughout February. You do need to book via the National Garden Scheme in advance to visit here.
