So when Yoto Player* the screen-free audio platform for kids got in contact and asked me if we would like to review Yoto Player I, of course, said yes. I was intrigued by the idea of a screen-free device that gave children some independence with their choices. But at the same time gave us access to mainstream authors such as Julia Donaldson, Judith Kerr and Roald Dahl. By using physical cards.

What is a Yoto Player?
A Yoto Player* is a connected screen-free speaker but it is so much more than your regular Bluetooth speaker. The Yoto player work s by popping in physical audio cards and music yoto cards into a card slot on the top of the player. It can only play the audio content that I can control by a parent app. There is no camera, no microphone and no ads. In today’s constantly connected world where I fear both boys have far too much screen time this really appeals. So having our yoto player children’s speaker means that you are completely in control of what they listen to.
Yoto Player Features
- The audio device also has a built-in speaker, nightlight and a clock. We use all three of these functions and in our opinion, it is one of the best screen-free audio players on the market.
- It has a built-in battery and a clever magnetic charging dock. Importantly Harry can use himself. This means that once charged it is fully mobile and Harry can move it around the house as he likes. He will often take it into the playroom with him to listen to as he plays. Although since we have tried out the Yoto Mini our original Yoto player stays firmly on his bookshelf next to his bed. As he likes to listen to audio books before bedtime. This a habit that I am more than happy to encourage as it has made a great addition to our nighttime routine.

First impressions & initial setup of Yoto Player
I really liked the way it came packaged with the yoto box being made of cardboard only. I did wonder if it was going to be difficult to set up our new Yoto Player as we have had bad experiences with wifi-enabled devices before. However, it could not have been simpler. All I did was switch it on for the first time. Download the Yoto app and pop in the welcome card into the top of the Yoto Player which came in the pack. The physical card walked me through how to use the device and some of its features. The app is self-explanatory and is also very easy to understand.
Harry was listening at the same time and enjoyed understanding how it worked. Including using the orange knob on the top to move through the tracks. Naturally, he could not wait to try out some of the kids audio story cards we had received. So we skipped a number of the welcome tracks! But the whole process took about ten minutes. It was so simple.
The welcome card itself once it has been used can then become one of the blank cards which you can record over. This means we can make our own card. Either with the boy’s creations or with radio and podcasts downloaded via the app.
Yoto Player Review – Things we love about our Yoto Player
It is so simple to set up – and takes hardly any time at all.
Perfect when you have an eager four-year-old who can not wait to try it out. Update- Harry is now six and a half and he uses it even more and loves it so much. It is one of th few toys which has grown with him. And I know we will get a lot more use out of it as you can buy new cards all the way up to age 12 from the Yoto store.
There is a wide range of pre-loaded cards which you can buy.
There are titles from many well-known authors with stories that are great for both the boy’s ages. Suitable up to the age of 12. Not only that but they are reasonably priced. For example, you can get a Julia Donaldson bundle of six stories for £19.99. Many of the stories are priced between £4.99 and £6.99. We find the best yoto cards are those which come in bundles as they work out great value for money. Plus they offer free shipping over £40.
It is not just Audio Books
It is not just stories the audio cards include activities, a music player and sound cards (including nature sounds), a daily podcast and radio. There is even white noise which I use to use when the boys were tiny. Plus you can make your own content cards and there are audiobooks in other languages. Such as French so as they start to learn languages at school it’s a great way to support their learning.
Self-operated
Because it is so easy to operate harry can use the player all by himself choosing the cards he wants to listen to. He quit often disappears to listen to stores or music cards. You can even buy a handy binder to keep them all in although I can not guarantee that they will be put back in!!
No need for a wi-fi connection
Since we spend a lot of our time travelling. So the fact that you can download the content onto the player via the app is ideal for road trips. And the fact that you can then listen to that content without the need for an internet connection is a big plus. The Yoto Player* can hold up to 140 hours of content and also has a headphone jack. Although if you are looking for a travel companion then you may want to consider the Yoto Mini. Free content
There is also a lot of free daily content. Yoto Daily is a free piece of audio content that you can access each day. Plus there are also Yoto Radio Stations which is a kid’s radio channel that you can access at any point.
Yoto Club
One of the other great things about Yoto Player is that you can sign up for the Yoto Player club. This means that each month you are sent a new yoto card for only £6.99 a month. Many are seasonal and come wth some activities and postcards for the children.
Lots of gifting options
If you are looking to build a collection of story cards then they make great gifts. Especially as they do not take up much room. I know parents all over that are very grateful for this fact! If you are not sure what stories the children may like then you can filter the audio cards by best sellers, new products and suitable age range. Plus there are lots of accessories you can buy, such as card wallets, headphones and an adventure jacket. Which is basically a coloured silicone cover that protects your Yoto Player.
The clock and nightlight feature
In the app, I can set the wake-up and sleep time meaning the picture changes from the sun to the moon. Indicating it is bedtime. Then the night light also starts to work. It is not too bright and perfect for his age group. Where some of the young kids night lights are too bright and keep him awake.
Yoto App
Is wonderful as well as letting me control the nightlight function. It also gives you complete control over the audio files and means that it is easy to select the device which you want the audio card to play on. The app allows you to manage Bluetooth connectivity and pairing, the library, night light colour and clock operating times. You can also use it to make your own cards in your family accounts.

I’m intrigued by the no-screen, and no-ads on this. It is so hard to find things like this that still connect to the wifi. Love that they can choose stories, but there is a Parent app and that they can listen to the stories as they play. The Yoto Player seems like a really fun and thoughtful device.
